If I never hear another criticism of Sean Avery it will be too soon. I'm not going to sit here and catalog all the "controversial" moments in his career. Everybody who follows hockey can recite them by now and the fact is that none of them are particularly "controversial". In a sport known more publicly for it's colossal failure to attract fans you would think that the NHL would at least privately be thrilled that any "casual" sports fans might be able to identify any NHL player not named Sidney Crosby. Despite the popularity of loud mouths like Jeremy Roenick the league appears to be taking the NFL approach towards "controlling" it's players. The problem is that the NHL courts this kind of "outburst" and the fans reward them for it.
The NHL has interviews of players and coaches on the bench. They mic players at All-Star games. They encourage players to blog. They do everything they can to try and make the players "more available" to the fans. Sean Avery should be the most popular player in the League headquarters. He gets press for his off ice relationships. He gets press for his off season internships. He gets press for a single, somewhat crass, sentence. For a league that should be desperate for press they are doing everything they can to "bland" the fans to death.
They swapped the jersey color scheme so that every single home game looks exactly the same as the next. They tweaked ... [Read More]
On paper and before the season started, Monday night's game could have been named the "Toilet Bowl" considering both teams had less than stellar years last season. Both were expected to go exactly nowhere this year. A funny thing happened on the way to the draft lottery, coaching changes for both teams took place. Better play followed for both teams. I liked Monday's game for a lot of reasons. For starters, this was one of the best losses the Kings played. They outshot their opponents. LaBarbera made amazing saves at key times. Handzus and Armstrong dominated on draws. But for some penalty trouble late, perhaps there would have been a different outcome.
The fans also made a difference as the seventh man. Never do I remember fans chanting and cheering on the Kings with the volume, intensity and consistency they did Monday. It may not have changed the game’s outcome. I watched Los Angeles take it up a notch when the fans voiced their vocal support.
This is not all sunshine and rainbows by any means. If I am scouting the Kings right now, then this would be what I would recommend opponents do: Make the Kings take penalties. Period – end of story. Why? With the new defensive commitment under Murray, this team is now in the top half of the league on the penalty kill. As of last week, it had the 11th best kill. In last year’s forgettable season, the team was... [Read More]
Los Angeles' opponents didn't get the memo that this year's Kings got game. I pity the teams that assume two points are theirs solely because their opponent is Los Angeles. For the record, I acknowledge my obvious bias. I get that the Kings are a work in progress. XM interviewed Lombardi on Friday. Dean spoke carefully and slowly. I characterize his responses in that manner because I perceive Lombardi as a man who is rarely at a loss for words. Inflections aside, he explained that as far as the Kings have come, is as far as they have to go. It is undeniable that this team is for real – but is simultaneously inconsistent as the team learns how to win.
Edmonton had a five (5) day break between Wednesday’s loss and their prior game. The Oilers are a troubled ship and some are saying that MacTavish is on the hot seat. Heck, over that span, the team had meeting after meeting after meeting. Players met. Coach and players met. Then, as they say, they had to play the game. The Kings rebounded from an ugly Calgary loss to a strong win against Edmonton. When Canada’s Sportsnet reporter, Mark Spector, wrote about the game, he said the following:
“Wednesday’s 2-1 home-ice loss to the hapless Los Angles Kings turned up the heat on MacTavish. With the effort of Oilers players being publicly questioned by both MacTavish and his captains heading into a five-day break prior to the Kings’ visit, the Oilers coaches worked tirelessly on that very aspect. A collective soul searching took place inside the dressing room.
Then Edmonton took the ice against a Kings team that had been dismantled 6-2 the night before in Calgary
Another week, another Hockeywood Insider podcast. This week, Jesse and I do our best impressions of Queer Eye for the Hockey Guy, as we spend waaaay too much time talking about the Kings alternate jersey. And Jesse vents his spleen about which teams get to have black on their jerseys. You know, important stuff
