The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to have quit - on themselves, and coach Paul Maurice.
It is difficult to arrive at any other conclusion after the latest disaster in a season plummeting beyond repair. The Los Angeles Kings - dead-last in the NHL overall standings - blitzed the Maple Leafs for four unanswered goals in the first period Thursday night and coasted to a 5-2 victory here at the Staples Center.
These were the same Kings that suffered one of the most humiliating home-ice defeats in many years, a 7-0 shellacking by Nashville in their previous game, Tuesday night. But, the cure-alls arrived in town Thursday morning, clad in white and blue.
