The appropriate analogy came from Ted Nolan.
"Like watching paint dry," the Islanders' coach said of last night's second period.
In truth, though, it described much of yet another desultory home match for the Islanders, who dropped their sixth straight at the Coliseum, the latest setback a 3-1 loss to the woeful Kings. The loss stung for several reasons, the primary being that it dropped the Islanders (24-22-6, 1-4-1 in their last six games), into ninth place behind the Rangers in the Eastern Conference playoff chase. And the Kings entered with a league-worst 20-29-3 record.
