About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings News within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Waiting at the bottom, of course, is one Steven Stamkos, a pretty damn good reward for sucking seven months of the year.
But is Stamkos the clear-cut number one?

Now, here is where the asterisk comes in. Stinking the joint out worse than 29 other teams does not assure you of the first lottery pick. For that, like a perfectly-placed kick between the legs, you need the balls to drop in your favor.
Yes, Stamkos is the sexiest pick out there but, should the Kings come out the big winner on the NHL Draft Lottery day, you would have to think that the L.A. braintrust - now there is an oxymoron if I've ever heard one - will probably think long and hard about shoring up their abysmal defense or, in layman's terms, drafting Drew Doughty with the first overall pick.
And they may make out like bandits in the process.
I don't see any team in the top 5 (or bottom 5) moving to get Stamkos...
Tampa Bay wouldn't mind adding a blue chip defenseman like Doughty to their lineup so I doubt they'd make the move. Edmonton doesn't have a first. Maybe Atlanta but I don't see Don Waddell sacking up and making yet another gutsy move.
But that would be pretty nice to get Doughty AND a 2nd line center in exchange for the first overall.
While Tampa doesn't need Stamkos per se, keep in mind that Lecavalier is UFA after next season and St. Louis turns 33 in June. While I would imagine Tampa eventually lavishes Lecavalier with a huge contract, the possibility of him leaving does exist. If Tampa did have Stamkos as the highest rated player, then they would sniff at what it would cost to move up. Unfortunately, I think the best you might be able to extract is a draft pick/prospect + the right to swap 2009 first rounders--which was essentially what Florida got in 2002 when they swapped the #1 pick to Columbus for the #3 pick.
Atlanta "needs" defense, but they need more talent up front long term as well. And I'm sure if Toronto ended up with a top 5 pick, they'd certainly sniff around to see how they could land an OHL star forward.
Might be tough to land a #2 center and a top 5 pick for the #1 pick, if only most of these teams don't have a #2 center to begin with. I don't think you'll see a Lindros type bounty, but the #1 pick has been traded several times in recent years.
1999 - Complicated swap that saw Tampa move down from #1 to #4 while gaining a pair of 3rd round draft picks while getting assurances that the guy they would have taken #1 would still be there at #4. And they later traded the #4 pick to the Rangers for some more players and prospects.
2002 - Florida traded down from #1 to #3 with Columbus. All Florida got out of that was the right to swap 2003 first rounders which they didn't need to exercise. Florida also gave Atlanta, who was picking #2, a draft pick to induce them into taking Kari Lehtonen instead of Jay Bouwmeester.
2003 - Florida traded down from #1 to #3 with Pittsburgh. Florida got Mikael Samuelsson and swapped a couple picks. Hardly a blockbuster.
Stamkos is more of a consensus #1 than Bouwmeester and E.Staal were heading into the drafts. But if the Kings are trading out the spot, I think acquiring the right to swap first rounders would be a nice thing to get.......ie, hopes of contending for the playoffs while maybe having a shot at Taveras.

The team to target is Nashville. Getting the Florida #1(Probably top 5), the Nashville #1 (Mid Teens), one of their NHL defense, and one of their prospects that is close to NHL ready(Franson/Klein)for our #1 and Cammy is probably pretty damn close to doable.

Not a bad idea at all. If Dean can manage to pull that off, it would be awesome.
If not, I'd like to see them trade with Toronto, hopefully for their 1st from this year, and their first next year.
