Ryan Smyth was taken off the ice on a stretcher after Los Angeles defenceman Jack Johnson checked him into the glass at the end of the Avalanche's bench late in the second period Saturday night.
The Avalanche forward lay motionless on the ice for several minutes as trainers rushed out to attend to him.
Smyth was skating up the left side of the rink and was checked by Johnson just after dumping the puck into the zone. He rammed his head into the area where the glass begins just after the Colorado bench. No penalty was called on Johnson.
In the lockeroom after the hit, Smyth was conscious and walking. He was being taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.
