Slovenia and Norway were set to face off Tuesday evening at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre for an exhibition game as part of the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation world championship. Tournament games are slated to start in Halifax and Quebec City on Friday. Local kids have been scrambling for autographs of Slovenian and Norwegian players this week, especially that of Anze Kopitar, the star sophomore of the Los Angeles Kings and the first Slovenian to play in the National Hockey League.
Both teams have been practising at the Port Hawkesbury arena since Sunday, which the mayor describes as a big score for the town.
Billy Joe MacLean has been meeting with players since the weekend when his grandson, Daniel, brought Kopitar’s rookie card to the arena.
"He was awfully excited," the veteran politician said, after his grandson got the card signed by the player himself.
