Rookie Rod Pelley, who arrived less than an hour before the game as a reinforcement from the parent club in New Jersey, scored a shootout goal ending a league-worst 12-game losing streak in the Lowell Devils' 4-3 victory over the Monarchs last night before 6,816 in Verizon Wireless Arena.
The teams meet today at 2:05 p.m. in the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass., where the Devils have not won since Dec. 27 -- an 0-7 streak.
Despite a four-game winless stretch the fifth-place Monarchs (23-23-4-3, 53 pts.) actually gained ground in their chase for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. Fourth-place Springfield lost to Hartford, 6-1 last night. Manchester earned a point by holding on for overtime and now trails Springfield by two points.
