Nate Thompson's one-timer in the slot with 50.3 seconds to play in overtime lifted the Providence Bruins to a 4-3 victory over the Monarchs before 6,924 in Verizon Wireless Arena last night.
By hanging on for overtime, the playoff-hungry Monarchs (28-28-5-4, 65 points) gained a point in their chase of Springfield for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. Tonight at 7 the Monarchs are at Hartford, the second-place team in the division. Springfield, idle last night, hosts Worcester.
"It's a fragile mind-set that our guys have at times," said Monarchs coach Mark Morris after this one that got away. His club gave up leads of 2-0 and 3-1.
