Doughty is also putting a lot of pressure on himself to be in the Los Angeles Kings’ lineup when the season opens in October. Like countless other Canadian hockey players, the Guelph Storm star grew up idolizing Wayne Gretzky and has been a long time fan of the Kings and would love to suit up with them this season.
“Oh, it would be great,” Doughty said. “Rob Blake was one of my favorite defensemen when I was growing up, when I was younger. (I’m) just very excited go to the team. I've dreamt about it for so long, and since the season started I've kind of wanted to be an L.A. King, so I'm just so very happy that it happened.”
It looks like Doughty will get the chance to prove himself quickly.
“His understanding of the game is tremendous,” Kings’ Assistant GM Ron Hextall told NHL.com. “He's got to learn how to be a pro, but it looks like he has the chance to be a really elite player. We have spots available, so we will see where he's at. We're not going to promise anything either way, but he'll have a chance to come in and earn a job.”
