Ersberg takes the scepter…
Rookie goalie Erik Ersberg had his second shutout in just his tenth start Thursday night against a pretty good Coyotes team. That bodes well for L.A. considering that Ersberg is not supposed to be the future for the Kings in net. That job is said to belong to Jonathan Bernier.
Ersberg has looked good down the stretch and that should create a dilemma—a good one—for GM Dean Lombardi. Lombardi has five goalies under contract for next season, but here’s the dilemma; Ersberg isn’t one of them. Who do the Kings get rid of? Do they try and move Cloutier? It’s doubtful that they could move him. He hasn’t lived up to the hype and his numbers just don’t match the money he’s making.
Do they try and move Jason LaBarbera? Doubtful. Other than Cloutier he’s the only one with real NHL experience. Moving Bernier would be insane. That leaves Daniel Taylor and Jonathan Quick. Neither of these goalies are what you would call “blue chip” prospects, but neither are they ready for the scrap heap. Then you have to ask, “Do they keep Ersberg”?
