As Matt Ellis attempts to write the next chapter in his hockey life, the plot of the story looks to be the same.
All through his junior hockey and pro playing career, the Welland native has had to deal with the naysayers who have underestimated his potential and his on-ice ability, though not his desire to prove them wrong and his stellar work ethic.
Soon, Ellis will leave Welland for Los Angeles, where he's banking that hard work and a positive attitude will guide him to a spot on the Kings roster. With plenty of new faces in the organization -and uncertainty surrounding where he fits in -Ellis is in a very familiar situation.
"I've based my career on proving myself," Ellis said following an on-ice workout yesterday morning with fellow Wellanders and pro hockey players Andre Deveaux and Dan Girardi at the Seymour-Hannah four-pad in St. Catharines.

I liked his play last year overall, IMO, Decent but not spectacular play in the limited games he played with the Kings. Not a liability. I hope he plays like he is on a mission and earns a spot on the roster.

The Kings will finish 19th to 23rd in the league for the 2008-09 season. Yeah, I hit the Koolaid, so what? You say it...like it's a BAD thing.
It's gonna be tough for him to earn a spot, there's a bit of a forward logjam going on at the moment. If he makes it, good for him.
maybe not as tough as it'll likely be for others... a player plucked off of the waiver wire who was lauded by the Red Wings for his competitiveness and work ethic ain't likely to pass through waivers this time either.
and if he should somehow actually pass through unclaimed at the end of camp when most other teams probably still have a full plate, it's highly doubtful he'd make it back on re-entry.

He'll definitely make the team, he played well as a King, even with our crappy situation. I liked his work on the PK and the Kings could use him to bring lots of energy. He could definitely fit in well with Army on one of the lines, because we all know Army isn't going anywhere.

I completely agree! I loved Matt Ellis last year with the Kings. His Penalty Killing work was great, and he had a talent for getting opportunities around the net. He can play both Center and Wing and brings a little bit of skill to the "energy" player position we've always had in Zeiler or Giuliano. I think he would be a perfect fit on the 4th line and the Penalty Kill, and I would be disappointed to see other players, including Derek Armstrong, edge him out of that spot.
