Providence leads series 3-0; Game four in Manchester on Monday

MANCHESTER, NH – Right wing Jeff Hoggan deflected the puck off of goaltender Jonathan Bernier's pads and into the net as the Providence Bruins took game three of the 2008 Calder Cup Atlantic Division Semifinals with a 3-2 overtime win to top the Manchester Monarchs in front of 3,448 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. Providence leads the best of seven series 3-0. The Monarchs and Bruins face-off in game four in Manchester on Monday, April 21 at 7:05 p.m.

In sudden death overtime, Hoggan scored the game-winning goal, shorthanded, at the 5:34 mark for the 3-2 victory. Hoggan carried the puck through the left face-off circle where he was hit by defenseman Troy Milam. The right wing followed the puck behind the net and flipped it toward the net. The rubber biscuit bounced off of Bernier's pad and into the back of the cage.

The Bruins scored the lone goal of the first period at the 17:07 mark. Hoggan sent the puck around the boards in the Monarchs zone to center Matt Hendricks who was waiting behind the net. Hendricks threw the puck off of Milam's skate and directly onto the stick of left wing T.J. Trevelyan who backhanded the disk past Bernier, stick side, for the early 1-0 lead.

Doubling the lead to 2-0 was center Wacey Rabbit with his second goal of the playoffs. Trevelyan sent a tape-to-tape pass to Hoggan who took the initial shot on net which was kick-saved by Bernier. The rebound was controlled by Rabbit who sent a slap shot into traffic that sailed over the right shoulder of the netminder at 9:21 of the final period.

The Monarchs, after having two goals waived off earlier in the game, scored two power play goals to end regulation in a 2-2 tie. With a four-to-three man advantage, Milam scored his first goal of the playoffs cutting the lead to one. Defenseman Peter Harrold sent a pass to right wing Teddy Purcell at the bottom of the left face-off circle who relayed the disk to Milam in the slot. Milam turned the pass from Purcell into a goal by sliding the saucer through the five-hole of goaltender Tuukka Rask with 10:03 left on the clock.

The No. 1 power play team in the AHL during the regular season capitalized for the second time with the man advantage. Milam fed the puck to Purcell at his position near the bottom apex of the left face-off circle. Left wing Matt Moulson, at the left point, then cradled a pass from Purcell and blasted a shot on net. The puck, concealed by traffic, slipped through the pads of Rask and trickled over the line to tie the score at two apiece at 6:09 of the third stanza.

Bernier took the loss with 31 saves on 34 shots. Rask earned his third playoff victory stopping 33-of-35 shots.

Manchester went 2-for-6 on the power play. Providence was 0-for-7 on the man advantage.
