On a rare night when the goals came in bunches for the Devils, it was an incident that followed a defensive breakdown that demonstrated best just how much they knew they needed a victory.
It happened 12:53 into the second period of their 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Prudential Center.
Kings defenseman Jack Johnson had just scored to cut the Devils' lead to 3-2. It was the second time in the period that the Devils left a man wide open in the slot to score off a feed from behind the net – a problem that had contributed to them losing their previous three games and five out of seven.
