Former UNH standout earns his first professional shutout

MANCHESTER, NH – Left wing T.J. Trevelyan tallied the game-winning goal with three minutes and eight seconds left in the game and goaltender Kevin Regan earned his first shutout in his debut as the Providence Bruins blanked the Manchester Monarchs 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 9,932 at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Manchester (39-31-5-4) finished the 2007-08 regular season in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 88 points. Providence (55-17-3-4) is in first place in the Atlantic Division with 117 points with one game remaining on their schedule.

Following two waived off goals by the Bruins, Providence's first official, and ultimately decisive, goal came courtesy of Trevelyan's 18th marker of the season at 16:52 of the third period. With Providence pressuring in Manchester's zone, defenseman Matt Hunwick flipped the puck toward the net. The disc settled on Trevelyan's stick and the winger buried it past Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier. Center Zach Hamill was credited with an assist on the goal.

Right wing Jeff Hoggan doubled the Bruins' lead on a shorthanded tally at 17:30 of the final frame. With defenseman Dwayne Zinger in the box for hooking, the Bruins did not appear to be at a disadvantage. Capitalizing on a turnover in Providence's zone, Hoggan was sprung by defenseman Matt Hendricks and raced down the ice one-on-one with Bernier. Hoggan deked the goaltender to the right and slipped the puck into the net on the left side. Defenseman Sean Curry collected the secondary assist on Hoggan's 29th goal of the year.

Providence closed out the scoring with 13.7 seconds left in the game on an empty net goal from right wing Martins Karsums, assisted by left wing Chris Collins and defenseman Adam McQuaid.

Bernier was saddled with the loss, turning aside 27-of-29 shots. Regan earned the victory, stopping each of the 23 shots that he faced.

Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Providence was also 0-for-3 on the man advantage.

The Monarchs kick off their seventh post-season as they travel to Rhode Island for game one of the 2008 Calder Cup Atlantic Division Semifinals against the Providence Bruins on Wednesday, April 16 at 7:05 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
