This is so rad to have a place for derby and non-derby people to pontificate upon their obsession endlessly. I just wrote a blog about what makes Roller Derby so cool and why you'll probably want to make it out to a bout sometime soon, before it's too late.
It's got some great pics by Rinkrat and some fun punk rock stuff too.
Well, to me its fun to skate derby, and that's at 1910 Temple St., L.A. in the Echo Park/Historic Philipino District. It's also fun to skate in Venice with other Derby Dolls. Skating rinks are another option though there don't seem to be as many around as their used to be and the hours are always to wacky for me to show up.
That's exactly what I get from it. When I was growing tired of Punk Rock, I looked for other thrills and I found that same excitement when I went to an LA Kings game at the Forum. It was like a secret club when I went there and everyone was kind of winking at each other because we had found this sport that was so cool and it was "ours".
Flash forward 15 years and the same thing is happening over in Historic Filipino town. There is something so ultra cool that when you are at one of the bouts you look around and say, "These people know how to have fun!". To see something that is so DIY from the ground up to become so accepted by the fans that they sell out every gig is insane, and then to hear the ear-piercing cheering as Mila Minute and Laguna Beyatch are in the middle of a jam and it just gives you chills.
Being a photographer is so much easier when you have something that you love and you are trying to share it with people who haven't got a clue about what it is that makes it so special. Gal VaniZed hits the nail on the head with her "Roller Derby is an attitude" blog entry.
I just wanted to get out and skate with all these people the play this game, I don't think that the bank track is open for who ever wants to skate . So that is why I asked.
I use to Speed Skate in the 80's and was curious if they train the same or? ? ? ?
They have Fresh Meat practices that you can go to and they are all skill levels. I think they are only on Sunday nights. Gal can clue you in, she hardly misses one.
