To be serious, for those going out less. What has changed in life that made you clamp down on spending? Job loss? Too much debt?
I think for many people it's a lot of factors, but might be as simple as money isn't going as far as it used to. You're making the same amount as before but the price of everything else has increased.
I don't see the price of gas leveling off any time soon, that's only going to keep going up. The price of most grocery items is increasing, not decreasing and that's another thing where I don't see the prices leveling off. Costs for restaurants are increasing and they're having to pass the costs on to their customers. You're spending more in gas to go out and more for the food once you get there.
I work as a substitute teacher and the district I work in doesn't pay as much as some other districts and then because the price of gas is going up, it's costing me more to get to work, but they haven't adjusted the pay yet, nor are they likely to with the budget crisis that's facing most school districts.
So for me, I've got less discretionary income to spend due to an increase in prices that is out of my control. I've made the decision that I'm trying to limit my spending in all areas but if I'm going to be spending it I'd rather spend the money on things opposed to food, where you eat the meal and it's gone.
Fast Food places should NOT have tip jars, that's plain stupid. Then again, I never worked in a fast food restaurant, so I don't know if those people deserve it or not.
Even for Starbucks, I don't see why people would tip even like a buck for ordering coffee and stuff.
In everyone's everyday job, someone is "serving" someone. If you ask for help at Target, is that person not pointing you in a direction and sometimes going out of their way to look for the item for you? Why don't you tip them then?
So for fast food restaurants to have "tip jars", eh... I don't like it. But hey, if people tip them, then great. I guess it's better to just have it there instead of not having it, right?

I'm no longer a server, but my friends at Kings say that business is up not down. They also say that their tips have been affected but not by much. I guess it depends on the area, establishment and clientele.
I think the tip jars on the counter is another attempt to try and compensate for the lack of paycheck. And for the people who have actually worked in the CASH industry, it becomes a drug. I give my tips that I recieve to the team jar, bescause I feel for them. I really wish that I could do more for them. But do remember, I mostly have just out of high school kids working for me, and their making $8.00 an hour. How many can compare to that at their age!
Do you tip the person(s) making up your room in a hotel? I have always done it, flat fee(tip) per day, but damn this trip he/she has been horrible. The real problem lies though, that I believe in Karma, what comes around.....
I tip the same as I always have...based on my experience. If the waiter/delivery person is johnny on the spot then they will get tipped well (20-30%). If service is so-so they get 15%, if service sucks they get 10%. Only once did I have service so bad that I left no tip (I left a note telling them why there was no $$)
When times are tough for alot I actually expect better service. Show me you want to earn my hard earned dollars...a tip is not a right, it should be earned. And when you earn it, I will give it.

It depends on the business to tip, I still tip the same at a restaurant, I don't tip Dominos because they charge a delivery fee, I'm not sure if the driver gets any of that. I never tip at It's A Grind since all I ever get is straight coffee, and considering I have to pour it myself, they should tip me! I tip the balloon bounce guy at my kids parties, those things are heavy.
