Interesting. I saw this in the paper at the barber shop this morning.
The other pics I see of it give a better view of the damage.
It looks (to me) like it was a little more than a simple structural failure. Some sort of event internal to the cargo hold was probably the initiator. I imagine that bags were mis-handled, causing minor damage (i.e. a dent) to the inside skin of the cargo hold. This minor damage (which could have happened many many flight hours ago) finally gave way after so many cycles of pressurization/depressurization, becoming a small crack , and the resulting rapid release of internal pressure caused the crack to increase rapidly in size. The fast-moving air probably blew that fairing off the body of the airplane.
My accident investigation skills are a little rusty from so many years of disuse, but that'd be my best guess from looking at the pics.

careful. If someone at Homeland Security or the TSA sees this, we will have to declare bubblegum in our checked luggage as well as our firearms.
or, if one chooses to be so brave as to carry on gum, it will be in a separate quart size bag, unwrapped and smashed down to under 1/8" thick.

That's the way the media is trying to slant it by the way they're writing about it...even without saying so much. But to me, it's doubtful that damage was caused by an explosive device.

If it was an explosive, It's a darn weak one. I'm leaning towards your initial thoughts, FBJ.

Hmm...They're saying in an AP article that it was possibly an O2 tank that popped and ripped the hole.
I'm sure it could have been a flight-crew O2 tank (and I'm not sure where those are located in the aircraft), but the statement by the Boeing spokeswoman (that there are dozens of O2 tanks in the cargo hold) doesn't sound right to me. I can understand two and possibly three O2 bottles for crew use, but passenger O2 most likely comes from chemical oxygen generators that are in the passenger service units above passenger's heads.

Looks like an O2 bottle 'sploded. They've recovered fragments of the missing bottle from the cargo hold.
And my 747-flying buddy got back to me. No oxygen generators on 747-400s. All pax O2 is from cylinders. That just seems really really weird to me, since oxy cylinders weigh so much compared to generators.
