Blood Supply Reaches Critical Levels
Blood Donations Needed Immediately!!!

Southern California, CA –American Red Cross officials today announced plummeting blood supplies and a critical shortage Labor Day week.

To avert a crisis, Red Cross is making an urgent appeal for local residents to call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or log onto givelife.org and make an appointment to donate blood. Red Cross blood drive hours will be extended throughout Southern California for donor convenience.

“Every day we make triage decisions to meet local hospitals’ needs,” states Cliff Numark, director of donor recruitment for American Red Cross Blood Services, Southern California Region. “We’ve taken several strong steps to avert this emergency appeal; however, when the blood supply becomes so severely affected, we have no choice but to alert the public.

“All of the blood provided to the sick and injured in Southern California is provided by volunteer donors,” Numark continues. “The only way to avert a critical blood shortage is for more people to volunteer to donate blood, and we desperately need this now.”

As of Sunday night, the Red Cross blood supply inventory for all of Southern California included just 24 units of type O-negative blood, 6 units of type B-negative blood, 34 units of A-negative blood and only 107 units of B-positive blood. If supplies are not replenished, the American Red Cross fears its shelves will lack the blood types most needed for treating trauma patients and newborns.

$100 A Day Gas Card Giveaway

“The Red Cross is offering everyone who presents to donate blood or platelets at a Red Cross blood drive in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, and Ventura counties a chance to enter a daily drawing to win a $100 gift card for gasoline. Entries will be accepted at all Red Cross blood drive locations, and will be limited to these Southern California counties. The promotion runs from August 25 though September 7, and one winner will be drawn each day of the promotion. Winners of the free gas drawing will be announced by September 15th. Prizes are non-transferable and not redeemable for cash. American Red Cross employees are not eligible.

The American Red Cross urgently appeals to Southern California residents to donate blood. Giving blood is safe. It is simple. Any healthy person age 17 or older (age 16 if accompanied by a parent) and weighing at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate blood.

All eligible donors are asked to schedule an appointment to donate blood by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or by visiting Give Life | American Red Cross. To organize a blood drive, call 1-800-491-2113. For Spanish, please call 1-866-POR-VIDA (1-866-767-8432) or visit Untitled Document.

To sponsor a blood drive, please call 800-491-2113

To volunteer please call 800-498-9910

Thank you!

If you have been told previously by the American Red Cross or another blood center that you should never donate blood, please disregard this message. If you recently made a blood donation, or if you have already scheduled an appointment to donate blood, please accept our thanks on behalf of the patients whose lives you may have touched.

Southern California Blood Services - 100 Red Cross Circle, Pomona, CA 91768

To donate blood you must be at least 17 years old (16 years of age with written parental consent), weigh 110 lbs. and be in good health.
Thank you Dave. All of the donor centers will be open until 7:45 tomorrow night. The need is indeed urgent.
I am Supervisor of the Pomona Donor Center and our home office and lab is there. I can tell you that our blood supply on the shelf is low.

Even if you think you have bad veins, please don't let that stop you. We held the needle in place for one donor that insisted on donating for 41 minutes and had one other donor that my best techs would not touch and I got her on the first try. If you are 16 and going to a donor center, you MUST have your parent with you. Only if the drive is at a high school will we accept written parental consent.

One unit does save 3 lives......Thank you all!

I give blood every other month when the blood mobile stops by my work but if there was a way to make this a tax write off like donating clothes or time at the food shelter they would be able to get more people to help out. I'll still continue to help out as much as I can but having to take personal time off and having to deal with some people who act like you are wasting their time kind of make me feel like not bothering. (I know most of the red cross employees are nice but I've been stuck with some of the not so great employees)

Then find out who the local recruiter is and complain. If you make appts online (like I do), the confirmation e-mail they'll send you will have the name of the local recruiter.

Don't let a few bad vampires spoil it for you.

I agree and asked for more info in a PM. I can go to the collection staff AD and discuss this personally. It should not happen, no excuses and on behalf of the Red Cross Management team, I apologize.

I used to donate frequently. But then I started getting tattoos. And since I get one every year on my birthday, I never go that requisite year.

Can I donate platelets, though? Or are those out, too?...

Nope, those are out too I'm afraid. If you want to keep getting tattoo's you can go out of state to a state that is "regulated" and get a tattoo there. Then you can still donate in california. Just a thought.

I donated again yesterday. The good thing about donating on Thanksgiving is you get a quicker buzz.

Please donate. If you say you aren't in good enough health or too old, you are a puss. There was an eighty-year-old woman donating yesterday. She told me a story about how the Red Cross (and everyone else) used glass bottles to hold the blood. And while in the age before all of the blood born illnesses, they would just wash the bottles out. What a trip...
