So we welcomed a new member to our family a couple of weeks ago. We adopted a 2 year old Bull Terrier from the Bull Terrier Club of Puget Sound. He couldn't have fit better into our family. His name is Diego (used to be Abel but we had to give him a "D" name to fit into the family). I don't have a url of his photo or I would post it. If anyone can help with this I will post but he is great.
Got some questions from anyone who has a dog. Is anyone using the Nutri Nuggets (I think this is the name) from CostCo? It is the Lamb and Rice food. We started him on the Solid Gold M Millenium but it is pricey and he is plowing through it. I need to find something that I can buy at a cheaper price for more food (and this Kirkland brand fits that bill) but I want to make sure it is a good food. Does anyone have experience with this brand/food? It is either the Kirkland brand or Nutra Nuggets. Thanks.
i don't know those brands because i don't have a costco membership, but i used to feed my boston terrier cheap food. it wasn't so good for her coat (she was balding behind the ears) so i had to switch to something with less filler (cornmeal) and more nutritious ingredients, so i went with innova. it kind of costs a lot, but not too bad and she doesn't really eat a lot, just a cup a day, but then again she's only 18 lbs and i control how much she eats because i don't want her getting fat.
other times i make her homemade food as an occasional dinner treat. basically turkey pot pie without the pie. it has chicken broth, butter, flour, turkey, carrots, peas and parsley in it.
i've heard the quality of food you feed your dog is really important for their overall health so it's best not to scrimp on it if you can help it.
I use Eukanaba for my dog. I set a timetable for him, 6pm every day. a 15 lb bag is around $35, which would seem expensive, but my dog has been on Eukanaba pretty much all his life. he is 16 now, and healthy.
I shop at Petco where they have a pretty good plan, as in buy 9 bags, get 10th free.
Sorry roenick, never have used the kirkland brands. And the high priced stuff you can only get at the feed or pet stores always seemed to be "Fart Food" for every dog I've ever had. Believe it or not, most of them did very well on Alpo lamb or chicken and rice blends. They were all healthy and lived a long life, for pit pulls. the youngest died at 14yrs old.
You may just have to experiment for a bit, trying this or that brand till you find one that you can afford, the dog likes, and doesn't gas you out of the house or cause to much weight gain or loss. Good luck.
I have found my dogs don't like the cheap stuff adn my wallet can't handle the expensive stuff. I go in the middle about 15-20 for about a 20Lb bag. Currently I am using Purina One, I switch around to give the dog a variety. The higher prices stuff does work better as far as smaller poops and better coat. As they get older the senior formula is definately worth the extra money for their health adn mobility.
Also, (getting on soapbox) make sure that your dog is chipped and tagged. I know SirJW is against the chipping thing, which is cool and i respect that, but I recently had my dog run away and they said the chance of getting it back with it being chipped and tagged was greater than just tags. Most rescue groups already have their dogs chipped, just make sure to transfer over the information and make sure it is current with your address.
Due to beef and chicken food allergys my dog has to have either potato & duck or venison. She is currently on Natural Balance Potato & Duck dry food.
Personally you might want to look into consulting with your vet just incase of any kind of food allergy's you might not be aware of, then again i'm a little overly protective of my dog and that might not be needed.
Eukenuba, they have dog-specific foods so I use Labrador.
Only way to go, although my dog eats everything anyway.
He specifically likes to steal the bread out of the bread drawer when someone leaves it open. Not a slice or two, the whole goddamn loaf!
