For the last couple of months I've had some discomfort off and on. Nothing really specific... just lower back feeling strained or something. Sometimes I'd wake up with it feeling out of whack, but it would always go away and it never impacted my daily activities. I tried stretching it out a lot and maintaining better posture throughout the day and things seemed to be better.
A few weeks back I played golf and by the end of the round it was affecting me. I wasn't able to finish my swing normally. I rested, stretched, etc, and it seemed to be doing just fine after that day.
Well, now, I just finished playing 4 hockey games in 5 days and it's killing me. It was fine through the games, but for the last two days I'm feeling it no matter what I do. It's specific to my left side, just above my butt. It's weak, too. I'm having to strain and compensate when I try to lift my left leg (especially now, when in a seated position), whereas my right side is totally normal.
I've got a doctors appt. on Tuesday, but I'm looking for advice for what to do until that time. I don't know if it's a strain or a tear or what the heck it is. I don't know if stretching it is good or bad. I don't know if there are positions I should try or anything else I can do to really determine what the problem is. I don't know what I should ask for (or demand) at the doctors office.
If there's anyone who knows lower backs, I'd love some help...

Get from amazon or some such a copy of the book by Augustus White "You and your aching back." That has a lot of good information (i think its out of print) For Doctors, you want an orthopedic surgeon and those physicians associated with Kerlan Jobe are probably considered the tops in los angeles. problem with them is they may cut as thats what they do. A chiropractor is supposed to be good with backs. Some are. they treat other ways than cutting and some folks swear by them. luck.
I feel for you man. I threw my lower back out a couple months ago. Dude, I wasin so much pain that I was on my hands and knees or sliding on my stomach just to get o the bathroom. it was ****ing horrible
I had back surgery about a year ago now, and had very similar pain. I would suggest going to see a doctor who specializes in Sports Medicine, They will likely take a x-ray and MRI of your back. The first doctors I went to were over at Kerlan Jobe. I was not very happy with the level of care I received from them. I went through UCSD Neurosurgery for my back, and they were fantastic. There are plenty of things you can do so you won't need surgery, like physical therapy, acupuncture/chiropractor, or even epidural injections. I would go see your doctor before doing anything else. Let them take a xray/MRI and figure out whats going on inside.

Many back problems can be traced back to th bed you are sleeping on. I was having these same issues, stiffness in the morning and slight nagging throughout the day and if i was standing too long (more than a couple of hours I would start to feel sharp pains). I bought a new bed and many of my back problems have gone away.

Yeah, I know I need a new bed, it's just that this is now so specific and different than the other achiness that I could associate with the bed... I'll get one soon, though. It's high on my list.
Well, for now, I'm going to check out that "Your aching back" book, and talk to a physical therapy guy who my brother knows... maybe have him take a look at me.
It's a start. Right now I'm just waiting for Tuesday to get here...
Interesting. I've been going to a chiropractor for over 3 months and my neck went from 15 degrees in the wrong direction to 5 degrees in the right one.
You're right though, Chiropractors who take just as many board exams as doctors are hacks.
