1) Always take a back injury as a serious deal
My story is....I have had lower back pain for the last 10 yrs or so. My pain
My story is....I have had lower back pain for the last 10 yrs or so. My pain was due to work (presumed injury, wearing a gun belt and vest). In March of this year, I had sciatic pain in my leg. I eventually had to go to the ER on three separate occasions. I had CT scan and a MRI that confirmed I had a major herniated disc. I couldn't deal with the pain anymore and had immediate back surgery on April 11th.
I was up and walking the next pain, pain free in my back area. I did have some leg pain (like a pulled hamstring and pulled calf muscle) and numbness to the top of my left foot. My leg pain did go away BUT my numbness is still here.
Yesterday, I actually met with a nuerologist regarding my numbness in my foot. He stated that there was some damage to the nerve regarding my L5 in my back. He stated that it should be back to normal but that could take a year or so.
So I would see a GOOD back doctor. Not all back issues require surgery. For whatever reason mine did and I am glad I did it. Make sure you at least have an MRI to see the extent of your injury. After surgery, go to a GOOD physical therapist. I go to Catz Physical Therapry in Pasadena. It is more of sports type of PT. My therapy are like personal training workouts. My back doctor stated to me that it would take 2 full years to fully recover from my injury.
I am back to work (July 1st) and even golfing and shot 79 last sunday. So you can recover and go back to your normal life.
I did have one other recent setback with a blood clot in my leg. This happened July
4th weekend. I only found out because a friend of mine who does ultrasounds wanted me to come in. I had some swelling in my leg but was not in any pain. So i went in and found out i had a clot. I would have never gone to have my leg checked on. I had to go to the ER immediately and was hospitalized for 3 days. I am now on blood thinners for 12 weeks.

Dang, Bad91!! That's some messed up stuff. Here's hoping that I figure this out quick and get off easy... The one thing I think I have going for me is that it feels like a muscular thing rather than a vertebrae thing. (Then again, I don't know how it all ties together and what different problems actually feel like.)

Get yourself to a Chiropractor post haste. They'll get you straightened out in no time.

I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV, but do not go to a Chiropractor.
From the sound of things you might have a herniation of L4 or L5/S1 or a disc protrusion. It also sounds like you might have the nerve being crushed,(Siatic nerve) causing you the pain in your rear left side and possibly down to your ankle.
For treatment until you see a doctor, use ice, just lay on the ice and let the irritation calm
down. Heat doesn't reduce the swelling, ice numbs the pain, and also decreases swelling.
Use a anti-inflamitory over the counter medication like Advil of Ibuprofien, do not use Tylenol it can kill your liver!
Do not fiddle around with stretching or doing any sort of manipulation until you consult with an MD not a
DC (Chiropractor).
Some people swear by their chiropractor, and I am sure people do get relief, or even cured by a chiropractor, but I don't feel comfortable, with someone manipulating and tweaking my spine, especially if they are only going by an X-ray, which doesn't really show everything.
Elevate your legs when laying down, use a pillow under your thigh or if you have a pad, place that under your thigh region, while laying on your back.
When you get out of bed, try to use your elbow to do the pushing of your body weight as this will also help reduce any aggitation. You have to roll onto your side, then plant your elbow into the mattress and push off using your elbow and arm.
I do not know where you live, but if you are in the San Fernando Valley, call Dr. Richard Nusbaum who is a very good orthopeadic doctor who specializes in spine and back related issues.
The only sure way for them to give you a proper diagnosis is by an MRI, so they can see exactly what is
going on. In your case, this might not be required, let the doctor decide that.
I have had 2 surgeries on my back, one in 1997 which was really only a temporary fix, and then fusion in 2000, which has cured my back issues.
Most doctors will try to have you rehab your back first, and if that doesn't work, then they might suggest a few other things before they reccomend surgery.
Your first choices would be an epidural, which is a shot of cortosione directly into the disc area, which is causing you pain. For some people this does the job, and that is that.
If that course of treatment doesn't give you any relief, then the doctor can make their reccomendation.
I feel your pain, and I know it's not fun!
I am/was a goalie, so my back was always being exposed, but I was able to resume normal activity, even
continuing to play hockey after my fusion in 2000.
I however was pretty bad, I could be playing catch with my son, and just a quick lundge or something as simple as sneezing would throw my back out, and I would be bedridden for weeks.

It has eased somewhat, but it still ain't right. Got my appt. tomorrow morning and we'll see what the docs say. I talked to a physical therapist and he gave me some good advice. He also said it doesn't sound too bad as far as back problems can go, and that with some targeted strengthening of my core I could be just fine. Regardless, I'm going in tomorrow and I'll take it from there.
Oh, and I got a new bed, too. Getting delivered tomorrow.

Once you feel better - CORE STRENGTHENING. Yoga can really help with this, or swimming, etc... Strengthen your abs to support your back, especially if you play lots of hockey. My back used to hurt while playing hockey as well, so I made sure I did lots of ab work. I felt so much better while playing after that.

the answer is in 3 simple words: VI---CO---DIN!!! And remember to share. What comes around goes around. Or try ice for 15-20 mins then heat 15-20 min. and repeat. Do this a few times and it will help with circulation in that area which will help healing. Ibuprophen(SP?) then get to the doc for the Vicodin dillies and pop a few brewskis with them....dooooh

I don't know what MD's you've seen, but in all my years, I've never seen a MD that wants to cut first! I've also been the person on the insurance company side approving such requests. They have always been known to try less invasive measures first unless you have a cuada equina ( which is a medical emergency and causes loss of bowel and bladder function).
A Chiropracter will always do X-rays and say you need adjustments. That's what they are trained to do.
For me, I'd see an MD and start with physical therapy.

I've had that ever since I turned 30! Just thought it was a natural part of aging...
Seriously, though, I think this is just a 20 year build up of tight calves, a weak lower back, normal daily activities with less than perfect posture, and sports related torque. As it is, I already naturally pop and crack myself to relieve tension. What I need to learn is how to move and how to strengthen things properly so that I don't build up that tension the same way.

I'd seriously caution you to not do anything physically aggressive until you get checked out by your doctor. What you have right now may not be very serious but you could very easily make it serious. Notice anything about your initial story? How about how after every game, situation, or such your back felt worse???
Wake up. Your back is telling you something. Rest, ice packs, and ibuprofen until your doctor evaluates you.
Trust me. It's been 1.5 years since I've played hockey, and about 2.5~3 since I injured my back. Just had my 2nd epidural shot last week and while it's helped I'm still a long ways away from being anywhere near an ice rink.
Your back is not like a toe or something. It's still a very mysterious part of the body to many docs and there's still a lot they don't know about it. Play it safe and rest until you get evaluated. Sure, you might miss a week or two of hockey.
I've missed 18 months with no end in sight.

About 5 years ago I injured my back playing hockey. Fractures/Herniation.
I didn't know how bad it was for a few days because I didn't bother with seeing a doc until I found myself lying on the floor of my kitchen unable to move.
I went through all of the therapy, meds, shots, etc.... Nothing worked. The fractures healed, the two herniated discs were the problem.
About 3 months ago I was still in a lot of pain and would sometimes have complete numbness in my left leg. I was talking to a friend who had some back issues and he recommended a book. I bought the book and about 2 weeks after following it, my pain was no more. I now do about 5 miles a day on my blades and have dropped 10 pounds. I just called to sign up for winter league.
