Basketball has Michael Jordan. Hockey’s got Wayne Gretzky. The world of soccer holds a high place of honor for Brazilian footballer Pelé, while few cycling aficionados dispute the dominance of Lance Armstrong. On that same rarified plateau, Ty Murray stands among these peers as the most accomplished rodeo athlete in the century-long history of the sport. A record-setting seven All-Around World Championship titles under his belt, Murray has truly earned his nickname as “King of the Cowboys.”
nAs well as a below average Philly team to the Cup final.. I can't remember why he was fired that off season though...
Something to do with a chocking comment and having a primadonna Lindors do little while the Flyers got swept by the Wings in 97. It rang bad to my ears when I heard it: IMHO good coaches take the blame when things go bad and praise the team when they do well. Maybe I hold a grudge against his brother, maybe I thought it was weak on his part and haven't forgotten it even if it was more than 10 years ago.
Quote:
If Terry Murray was attempting a desperate measure to motivate his team for tonight's contest, it failed. But whatever Murray was thinking Friday when he implied that his players were choking, he may have been telling the truth.
The Flyers entered this championship round as favorites. They finished it humbled, swept in four games by the Detroit Red Wings.
Murray, guilty both of being right and telling the truth, ostensibly lost his job over that one frank phrase. Soon after getting his club to the Cup final, his contract was not extended – giving way to the stumbling, and brief, even laughable attempt of Wayne Cashman to be Flyers head coach.
Let us not forget how Murray, who never backed off his ''choking'' remarks, more fully explained what he meant that day.
“Competition brings out the best in you,'' he said. ''But sometimes it brings out the worst in you. If you stop competing, you are never going to break through. And you are going to be in one of those teams that were also-rans your whole life.''
