About This Page: This is a discussion on Reality Hipcheck within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Time to join a gym, But which to choose? I have all three pretty close and conveniently located, prices are similar so how do you choose?
They have different types of clubs as well. I go to a "Sport" club. It has the most variety of stuff, pools, B ball courts, cardio, free weights etc......

Go to each and take a tour. See how you like it. I'm a member of Bally and the one I go to is newly renovated. Really state of the art stuff. Still, 3-year contracts suck.
But it's really up to you. Choosing a gym should depend on what you hope to get done there and what kind of amenities, space, environment & equipment you prefer.
Go to each, and see how you feel about the facilities. All else being equal (price, upkeep, and equipment offered) I would choose the least busy one so you aren't waiting for equipment. If you don't do much extended travel, you don't have to worry about them having a lot of satellite locations (hotels will have gyms for you to use if you really need it)
Ballys sucks ass and a lot of the "bro's" that work there are the douche bag type
24 hour fitness is a bastion of steroid use and their trainers will even push cycles on those looking to get an edge
Personally for my family and myself I go to the YMCA because of the swimming lessons for my son and they have free day care/ baby sitting when the wife and I both want to go to the gym at the same time.
youre better off doing your own exercise program outdoors or something, at least for me its much more motivating to go run or bike at the beach or play hockey than too go sit in a gym feeling like your being judged by everyone there.

I go to Ballys in Montclair and I like it. No "bros" at this Ballys. I pay $12/mo, but I've been a member since 2002 (used to go to the new one in Culver City). I would avoid going between 5pm & 8pm, but I assume this is the case with any gym. I usually go in the morning or after 9pm (when I was too lazy to get up in the am).
My friend in Pasadena like LA Fitness and he said he was able to get a no contract deal and can cancel at any time, he pays $32/mo.
Most people I know like and go to 24 Hr Fitness. I would probably switch if I wasn't paying $12/mo.
I think you have to choose the best facility closest to you. I chose Ballys because I liked the Culver City facility, and got lucky when I moved to Upland that there are two new ones (Ballys & Montclair). All 24Hr & Ballys have gym pretty much everywhere, if that is something you are looking for.
I have 24 hour fitness but only because I got a good deal from a friend for 24 a month. I used to pay 35 for LA Fitness. All costs aside, there's not too much difference I've noticed. 24 does have a lot more gyms, and I found one that is less crowded during the evenings, though it's technically an "express", which means it has a lot less stuff.

i'm in agreeance with these fellas.
i used to have a 24 hr fitness membership (was only $14/mo through work), but the only times i had time to use it was during peak hours. meh. i'll also add that if you ever want to cancel, it's a pain in the ass.
anyway, i'm happier working out for an hour at home and then riding my bike to the beach or walking instead of driving to the shops and eats around me.

My personal experience has been that Bally's is the suck. I was a member there for 10 years and as soon as I had a billing discrepancy, all customer service went out the window. I gave them my debit card number when I signed up, and some months they would bill me two or even THREE times for the same month's dues. Even though I had paid, I received harassing phone calls from their finance department. PAIN in the ASS.
I now belong to LA Fitness and I love it. The gym is clean, it's reasonably priced, and they let me be on a month-to-month contract. THAT'S what I really liked, was being able to pay every month, and not having to commit to a year or more membership.
If you live anywhere near the Hollywood area, 24 Hour Fitness is not for you. There is no free parking at any nearby location. That might not matter to you, but I want to work out right after work. It would be an extra $30 a month for me to work out; that's more than three times my monthly membership fees!
If you are in the Hollywood area, I'd suggest LA Fitness. I've heard good things.
