I'm considering getting into graphic design and/or web design and am
Go to any Borders or book store and ask for the section of design books. Most stores have a nice selection to chose from. They have instructional books and such if that's what you need. Most design books though, aren't so much "instructional" as they are "collections" of nice work from around the US or world, or styles of design. Most of the books I have, I've gotten after browsing through the pages...if I like the work I see inside, I buy it and use it for inspiration/ideas.
Instructional, "How-To" books are just that. But they mainly focus on software. There's really no "How to be a good designer" or "You know you want to be a graphic designer if you read this" book. Each person will find their own inspiration.
My suggestion to you is to go to a book store and look at the magazines and books.
The only thing I can flat out tell you is a must have is Communication Arts Mag. Can't live without it.
dont waste your money on books unless youre looking to study theory (which is underrated and any aspiring designer should learn before even opening a program)
if youre just looking to learn photoshop and illustrator here are some sites that could be helpful.
Any of the Lynda Weinman hands on training books are very helpful. I've used many of them and still refer back to them from time to time. She also has a real great website (lynda.com)full of free tutorials.
Being a graphic designer is very different from being a web designer.
Graphic designer means you're the dick that just does pretty mock-ups in Photoshop & Illustrator, then goes and drinks a latte while the web designer pulls his hair out trying to implement your flaming logo and cute little animations.
Web designer means you have to learn, at minimum, html, PHP, Perl, CSS, mySQL, Flash, Action Script, XML, and probably some other **** I'm forgetting in order to make the mock-up the dick made in Photoshop actually display correctly in 10 different browsers, all of which display things differently.
I know they are two very different things, but I'm considering both. Still searching for what I want to do with myself, trying to leave everything open.
Love these sites and suggestions they are very helpful.
