Amazons are green and usually have a crown of yellow or red.

Dude, you are doing more than should be expected of you. Looks like you have another bird now!
FYI, there is a flock of them that live in and around Hermosa Beach. They often hangoutin Valley Park at dusk and chatter up a storm, but these are clearly wild now. They likely started from a pair that got out years back. The Wild Parrots of Hermosa Beach Photo Gallery by Joe at pbase.com
All of those parrots were once a part of the Bush Gardens Amusement Park in Van Nuys. When they closed in the late '70's they released all of their captive birds.

A parrot that was hand fed and raised as a pet will do fine in the wild.
They are so smart and adaptable.
They live as long as we do, so your parrot could easily outlive you.

I wonder if the Long Beach Parrots have any link...
I didn't find it, it found me. Flew down at a local park in San Dimas walked up and hopped on the shoulder of a lady there watching her kids play baseball.I have it now as she had no idea what to do.
In a perfect world I would love to retun it to the owners as I am sure they are going nuts having lost a member of the family.
If not I will keep it but its clearly well cared for very tame and handled quite often. We renamed it MANNY after ManRam, after all they both made they debut the same day.
If any of you in the san Dimas/laVerne/Glendora area know anyone missing their amazon let me know. They are worth about 750.00.
750?! No way?! Anyway, the same thing happened to my friend from Buenos Aires couple of months ago. She's a dog person and didn't know what to do with the Amazon parrot. But now... the parrot is star of the house, singing popular Argentinian songs and dancing with the song in the background.

Depending on the what type of Amazon it is, they can be worth anywhere from $600.00 to about $1500.00. The story about Busch Gardens is an urban legend. The flocks were here before the place closed, and almost every region had a similar story, such as a pet shop fire, where the firefighters released the birds and so forth. There were a lot of birds brought into the country, before the government started cracking down on the capture of wild birds. I used to see hundreds for sale at the Chino Auction back in the late 70s and 80s. It is much more likely that some of these birds escaped.

I've checked the local prices and... you are right. Damn! I've been planning to buy one of these for last 10 years:
Anybody has one?
The best place to shop is the Bird Mart they hold at the La County Fairgrounds. I think the next one will be in late September or early October. There are usually a lot of breeders there, and you can get a lot of information. Even if you don't find the bird you want, at least you will have some breeder information. A good breeder will have you come over and help feed the bird when it is very young, so that it bonds to you.

I realize the importance of the bird being hand-fed. In fact when I was a kid, we hand fed lots of these birds. I remember once we found a couple of inches of something that looked like a bird and we raised it to discover what kind of bird it was. It was a hawk. The beast was eating steaks for breakfast, lunch and dinner. No wonder she wasn't really happy about leaving the house and flying away. Took a couple of tries. I especially like the bigger parrots because they are on higher level of intelligence and emotional intelligence than some of the LGK-ers.
Of course the article I've posted describes the problems with these parrots - the more intelligent they are, the more attention they need and the more neurotic they can be.
