I think the main reason for the increase in autism cases is likely due to better recognition of social problems and the need that people in society have for labeling and diagnosing everyone.
In the past when a child had any of the conditions that might be considered autism or under the autism spectrum disorders, people didn't really talk about it. With mainstreaming and full inclusion the kids are in regular classrooms and there definitely is more recognition of the autism disorders. In the past these children would have been in special schools and viewed as socially awkward by others but perhaps not considered autistic, just because there wasn't a lot of knowledge about the condition that's out there now. Kids diagnosed with autism or any of the spectrum disorders might not have been diagnosed 50 or 75 years ago because autism wasn't really recognized until around 1940.
Environmental factors may also be part of the increase in the number of cases but I think researchers are starting to discover signs of autism in younger and younger children, before most get their vaccines. I think it's likely coincidental that the time when autism is most recognized and diagnosed coincides with the time children get many of their shots but that the signs were probably there beforehand.
That said, I also understand why many parents would want to blame the vaccines. I think if I was a parent and was told my child had a condition like Autism or Asperger's, it would be gut-wrenching. I also think it's human nature to try and find something to blame it on.
A preservative used in the MMR vaccines containing mercury is what was being correlated to Autism. The problem is, the preservative was eliminated from the vaccine several years ago and the rate of diagnosed cases has not changed. Some might suspect it has even gone up from 1:166 to 1:150.
A lot of the parents put their kids through treatments like chelation that are supposed to flush the autism causing metals out of the body. I have never seen this help - plus it seems dangerous (involves intravenous infusion).
Other things that "cause" autism: WiFi, Cell Phones, Homes built over landfills, eating tuna while pregnant, certain dyes, traumatic event early in the 3rd trimester, etc..
The truth is, no one really knows. For every correlation that has been made, there are 10 theories that disprove it. It is def. genetic as most of my students have an "interesting" parent or relative.

I gotta admit I have no idea what you're talking about... what happened to Jet? Did he get Polio?
I did a Google search because I was curious and apparently Jett Travolta has autism but has not been formally diagnosed because Scientologists do not recognize autism. They say he has Kawasaki disease.

Scientologists don't vaccinate.
Jet, while he may not have autism, is rumoured to be mentally challenged...
Scientologists don't admit to human anomolies like disabilities so my guess is, there hasn't been a whole lot of diagnosing and treating going on with Jet.
Google it. There were photos of a very sweet, grinning and full-grown boy-man with Kelly on a beach family vacation.
I'm not judging, honestly!
Because I kind of like the idea of flipping the bird to pill-pushing, therapy-jargonned do-gooder medical experts and just enjoying a kid as he is.
Don't judge so quickly. If you REALLY care about this topic, not just chit chatting, PM me and I will give you books to read written by MDs NOT scientologists.
