This sounds like fun to me. Now you can switch carriers as mujch as you want without having to pay a penalty.

If by fun, you enjoy cell phone companies jacking up the price of the phones they now leverage with contracts.

I HOPE THIS HAPPENS. People won't complain too much about 200 for a phone they were getting for free with a contract. Even in Europe, where it USED to be you bought the phone and service seperate they now have contracts too with much lower phone prices. Phones are reduced from 100-200 with contracts and rebates. Take the phone you ahve now adn add 150.00 to what you paid, whould you still pay it?
If ETF are illeghal thats exactly what you will see pricewise.

Did they rule all termination fees are illegal or just the flat rate fees? a lot of companies are now prorating the fees which makes a lot more sense. so if you cancel with a week left you only get charged 15 dollars instead of 150 or similar.

Even if this makes phone prices go up, I think overall I'll like it... mostly because I want to get out of my plan, though.

I don't want to pay $500+ for my phone. My last phone was a Palm 700wx which I received for $99 and I received a $100 mail in rebate.

I have known every time I get a phone, that I VOLUNTARILY sign a 2 year contract with VZW. I sign it understanding that I am committed for 2 years. I also have the option to pay full retail on the phone, if I do not not want to renew my contract. People do not know this going in?

I do understand wanting to change providers in the event of a takeover, however. Maybe provide customers 60 - 90 days to vacate their contracts without charge after the closing date of the merger.

What pisses me off more than an ETF is the paying tax on the full retail price of the phone.

I also find 2 years to be not too terribly long.

I called Verizon to inquire about their policy on canceling my contract which ends in October. They will still charge me 175. The guy basically read a legal statement explaining this.

They claim to have prorated ETFs but only if you have a special type of contract, which, obvious, I don't have. I didn't bother to ask what qualifies as a special prorated ETF type contract, as I am planning to cancel anyway and buy me a MFin iPhone.
