I saw this in Sunday's paper also, and the word "roadtrip" came to mind.
Then I began to wonder about what specific moment changed my life so dramatically. So dramatically, in fact, that the possibility of looking at flowers would evoke an Animal House'ish "roadtrip" from my mouth.
Don't go on the weekend and don't go to the main drag and I think you can avoid the crowds.
In fact I think there is a Chino Hills park where there are a lot of wildflowers right now so you don't even need to leave home. Here is a pic taken at the Lower Aliso Canyon Trail a few days ago.

March 10, 2008 Ken reports: I headed to Chino Hills State Park to see the status of the flowers in bloom. I was not disappointed! I hiked along the Lower Aliso Canyon Trail; the flowers are everywhere. There are pockets of poppies mixed with many other flowers. Chino Hills State Park is truly an oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle.
