"Distracted??" By what, all the meth you were doing? How do you not notice that a kid is missing for hours, long enough for the child to freaking die??? What did that two-year-old ever do to anyone to deserve to die horribly?
I hate people.

I don't know, unless drugs or alcohol abuse is involved, I'm inclined to have a little sympathy for the mom. It is negligence, and I can't see myself making that same mistake, but Lord knows I have made mistakes that potentially could have led to my sons harm. Any honest parent would admit that they have also. The death of the child is by far the worst punishment that can be given. I understand that she will probably have to be charged and there's nothing wrong with that, but, until I know she's a dirtbag, my heart goes out to her.
Every single one of these deaths I've read about are because the child is in the back seat, in a car seat. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess. Do they even have front-seat infant/toddler car seats? Or are they forbidden because of the risk of death in case of airbag deployment?

Every parent makes mistakes, and some of those mistakes are potentially dangerous. This is way, way beyond a "mistake." All two-year-olds ever do is look for trouble. If I don't see one of my two-year-olds for twenty seconds, I start getting a bit nervous and start to look around. I don't see the kid for a minute, I undertake a full search and rescue. I can't fathom how you would not see the kid for hours and not realize it. It's not like she had a dozen kids, she had three.
I swear this story has ruined my morning. I keep picturing the little kid, trapped in the car seat, screaming.
Yeah, I'm not a parent but I can't imagine a situation where if you had a 2 year old, you would assume your 6 and 4 year old got the child out of the car and wouldn't bother to check up on them after a couple of minutes tops to make sure the youngest wasn't left behind.

I drive a regular cab pick up and I can strap a baby seat to my passenger seat. I have to turn off the airbag in order to do so. That's probably why it's not common in vehicles that have a back seat. They don't have a switch to turn off the passenger side airbag.

This is a terrible, terrible story. But i agree with you, people make mistakes. I find it believable that she was unloading groceries and thought her other kids had gotten him out. I'm not saying she should win any mother-of-the-year awards, but i think the loss of her son is punishment enough for her (tragic) stupidity.
Now, compare this to a story i heard last week about a kid that died in a car because the mother was IN A BAR. In a case like that, the mother should be tied up and put in a kiln until she has a glossy texture.
I know a little about this through my boss, her husband's business partner was the kid's uncle. My boss' 16 year old daughter has been babysitting the boy since he was a baby, so she is beside herself with grief. Her 10 year old is also taking it very hard, trying to understand what happened. It is a very sad story and no drugs or alcohol were involved, she's a bit of a scatterbrain according to my boss. It obviously wasn't intentional and she has to live with it for the rest of her life. The kid was asleep in the carseat, so he probably never woke up. The whole thing is horrible. As soon as I know anything more about the story, I will post it. He would have been 2 next month.
