Laugh it up while you can PS3 fanboys.
Well of course you got the rings of death. Look where you have it. Don't you know you can't place your 360 within 5 feet of anything else? Otherwise, it will overheat and die.
I'm on my third one now, and I think Micro$oft has fixed the problem. From what I've heard, they added an additional heat sink and fan. I have noticed mine runs cooler now and so far, no problems. Just send it in and get your replacement.

No kidding huh? I only use the system with the glass doors open. In fact, I haven't even played it in about 2 weeks. The only thing I have been using it for is watching movies off a flash drive. My son has used it but today was the first time he was going to use it since last week.
It started with locking up both during a game and the flash screen. Then it just went from there to the red rings in about 10 minutes.
I'm not terribly concerned about it. The only real bummer is that I'll have to watch my divx files on my laptop until I finally get this back from MS. Hopefully the one they send me will have HDMI. If it does I can get rid of the DVD player.
I actually got that the other day and my heart stopped.
I turned it off and unplugged the power and plugged back in and turned back on and it was gone, and it's been working fine - very strange. Sucks for you though, guess no game in our Cup tournament? :(
Dude...I damn near fried this sucker. I wrapped it in two thick towels and let it bake for 25 minutes. When I unwrapped it I didn't have to let it cool because it was already off and cool to the touch. I guess it got so hot that it shut itself off. I fired it up immediately and all is good. I'll keep this thread updated if it happens again. For now I'm one happy camper.

I can't believe that worked! My understanding is the problem has been that the 360 gets so hot that the solder starts to melt and run. Then it cools and makes connections there shouldn't be and/or cracks the motherboard. So, I would think intentionally making it overheat wouldn't be good either. Crazy stuff.

That happened to me, it lasted for a couple weeks then went bye-bye.
What is the towel trick? If it worked for OP it might work for some others.
Seriously OP, you need to just pull that bad boy out of the entertainment console while you're using it, then just replace it when you're done. Ventilation is everything. Mine's sitting above my TV stand, 4 feet away from anything else that could possibly give off heat. Crammed in there, doors open or not, it's going to fry again. Here's hoping you eliminated those damn things for now, though.
