Since there has been a lot of talk about the new NHL 2K8 vs EA NHL 08 I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the evolution of the hockey video game. While searching for a site, I came across this:
I remember NHL 95, for genisis. It was so easy to score. All you had to do was go benind the net and come into the slot and either shoot or set up for a one timer. i scored 99 goals one time.

I still have this one hiding in the basement. I'll have to break it out some day just to see how far the games have advanced in 14 years:
This game was responsible for my being a hockey fan. I had no idea how hockey was played, but I bought a SNES and thought NHL '93 looked fun. Played the game, decided to catch a few Kings games on TV... and now here I am, 15 years later (the game was released in '92), a die-hard Kings fan.
My first NHL game was NHL 96. It's the only reason I love hockey to this day!!!!! Man, I loved that game. Oddly enough, I remember not picking the LA Kings... but the St. Louis Blues.

I am a fan of hockey and the Kings thanks to NHLPA 93. We got that game as a christmas gift when it was new, but neither me nor my brother were hockey fans.
Wayne Gretzky was the only player he knew of, so we always played as Los Angeles. He wanted to control TGO, so I was left with either Robitaille or Tomas Sandstrom, so I stuck with Luc whenever we played.
The fights in '93 are still better than the fighting engines in games today. Nothing like checking the other team in a scrum while your brother knocks some dude out with a haymaker.
Did anyone else notice how easy it was to injure Buffalo's Dave Andreychuk? One good hit and he'd be bleeding from his head. I also loved the hate that Shawn Chambers got from the developers. IIRC, he was rated a 1/100. One fricken' point.

NHL 95 played a huge factor in my love for the sport. That game helped me understand the rules, team protocol and various teams, players and positions.
I truly hope NHL 08 can transcend the curiosity of just the NHL fans and make its way into the hands of young sports fans. As far as I'm concerned, video games are the best way to market the sport to young fans.
