Default Nascar talk! The Allstate 400 at the Brickyard

Not sure if there are any Nascar fans here on LGK, but did anyone watch the Allstate 400 at Indy yesterday? The only person that could've been happy w/ that race is Jimmie Johnson. For those of you who didnt watch, there were some major issues w/ the Goodyear tires that were used during the race. The tires wouldnt last more than 15 laps without blowing up, which caused Nascar to throw "competition yellow flags" every 10 or 12 laps to allow the drivers to come in and change their right side tires. The race was a joke.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the race or what could've been done to avoid the problem? Should Nascar have had further testing at the Brickyard (the tires were tested by 3 teams in April)? Should Nascar open up the bidding on tires instead of just allowing Goodyear to keep the contract?

Something needs to done so that a situation like what occurred yesterday, at probably the 2nd biggest race of the year behind the Daytona 500, never happens again. I hope someone at Goodyear Tires lost his/her job yesterday.

I've been saying it for years now, Yes. And my brother agrees. He's an engineer for Mercedes and we're both big auto racing fans. It's about time Nascar upgrades to Michelin or better yet Firestone tires cause GY isn't good enough and never has been. The COT will only make things worse. The GY owner is friends with Nascar so who knows if they'll make the change but yesterday's race was embarrassing to watch. The open wheel cars have no problem on their tires when they race Indy and they're pulling 3Gs!

I agree with what The Natural says, why don't the Indy cars have this problem with their Firestone tires? I know the COT weighs more but there is no reason tires should be blowing up after 25 miles.

The race was like watching a LONG version of the All Star Race. Nice to see someone other than Kyle Busch in Victory Lane but I sure as hell hope that the race in Pocono next week is better.

The best race of the weekend was the trucks at Indy raceway park, plenty of give and take and lots of action up front.

I watched the race yesterday and all I can say is this is a major black eye for goodyear. Nascar should do whats right and let the teams choose their own tires. Racing can be very exciting at times but that was really hard to watch.

All I know is I loved the coverage provided by Nichole on ESPN on this race.

I do think that the COT is a major part of the problem. I dont remember Goodyear having these issues in the past when the older body style was run at Indy. Do you know if there is a multi-year contract in place for Goodyear or does Nascar re-visit the tire issue at the end of each season?

As someone mentioned, teams should have a choice as to who they want their tires to be manufactured by. At least that would force Goodyear, Firestone, and Michelin to continue to make better tires. The sad part is that Goodyear made a killing yesterday with teams been forced to purchase around 12 sets of tires a piece (at a cost of $3,400 per set if I remember correctly). So many tires were used that tires from Pocono had to be brought in because there werent enough at Indy.

BRING BACK HOOSIER. Why not let the teams decide whos tires they will use. NASCAR can still have set standards for each track and not have to be the bitch of GY. Thats was an embarassment to INDY.

and Goodyear sucks. Too many mandatory yellow flags, boring to watch but JJ won so it's OK.

The race was handed to him when the caution flag came out with 10 laps to go...

And your point is??

FINALLY got to see the whole thing last night and I could not believe how HORRIBLE it was! NASCAR could have figured out a different way to do what they did instead of having a "competion yelllow" with 10 laps to go to hand the race to WHOEVER was going to be the first off the pits at that time and with that being said... and since JJ was in the FIRST pit stall the race was handed to him!

Goodyear is the exclusive tire supplier of NASCAR through 2012.

What they should've done is had a tire test by the entire field rather than just 3 cars.

That's cute. Although I agree that the competition yellow coming out every 10-30 laps was complete bull****, you have to admit he did lead the most laps and most likely would have won the race no matter what pit stall he was in. Maybe your little Newman would have won with a better pit crew / chief.
