Default I need a new driver:

About 7 months ago, I busted my CG 460 Launcher at the driving range. It's time to get back into the swing of things with a driver, so I'm looking for recommendations.

I had a 65g shaft before, and I'm so buff, it was too light. I'm looking to go to a 75g to 85g shaft.

I also had 10.5deg loft, which was just too high. I hit the ball with a ****-ton of back spin so I was losing yards, so I wanna drop to 9 or 8.5 if possible.

I really liked the head-shape of the Launcher 460, but I want to know if these weighted clubs or new heads are worth it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for club head or shops to get outfitted with what I need?

Thanks!

-_Sf

PS - I'm not interested in 300 yard drives, I want 330 yard drives!

Well, you can go completely insane with a Golfsmith catalog trying to figure out the perfect shaft for you, then match that with a clubhead that's got the right loft... but that's a lot of work, and in the end who's to say if you ended up with "the right thing" anyway.

Whenever I've gone for something new, I've always ended up at Roger Dunn sorting through the used bins and just hitting a butt-load of balls with a butt-load of clubs until something looked and felt right. A lot of the used clubs have factory shafts in them, but there are always a number that have some other Aldila, Grafalloy, or Fujikura shaft in there.

Worst case scenario there is you go out to the course and find you can't hit the thing in the real world, so you take it back to Roger Dunn within 90 days and pick out something new to try. No harm, no foul.

Or... if you fall in love with the look and feel of a particular clubhead, but don't want some used POS with a shaft you'll probably have to replace, you can always get custom fit there at the store or at a local course. I'm not sure if the quick-change shaft technology is out there at the local stores yet, but if so that can give you some truly instant feedback.

Good luck!

i have a pretty fast swing speed (approx 105 with a driver) and i get good yardage from my taylormade r7 (draw) with the factory stiff shaft.
they're going for about $150 now. you might be able to find them cheaper than that.
but like mr.t said, you can go ape**** trying to hit everything in the store, or get yourself fitted by a good pro. a few years back, i bought a titleist 983 and was looking for a 9.5, and the pro told me i should be looking at an 8.5. i thought he was nuts, but he had me try the same club with the same shaft in 8.5, and i was hitting the ball 20 yards further with more of a line drive and less of a balloon. that sold me not only on the club, but finding a pro who knows what he's talking about and trusting him re: clubfitting.

I still use an old Wilson Deep Red 10.5 degree stiff flex shaft driver that I bought for like $65 a few years ago (bought a couple more like $15) during a clearance sale.

This picture shows a 400cc driver, I have the 360cc.

I've tried newer, higher-tech, more-expensive drivers and they can't compare.

The angle isn't conducive to bomb drives, but if I can hit it 300 yards (which I've done on at least a couple occastions), maybe you can get it to 330.

Have you tried the Callaway FT-i yet. I hit one at Roger Dunn last week. Loved it.

I have a CLeveland 460 Launcher I won a few years ago at a tournament so I wont go spend bank on a new driver. I'd suggest going to Dunn and testing out different clubs and NEVER buy new. Most people will buy a club and use it a few times and find it's not right for them and have to sell it or return it. Then you can buy a used 3-5 times driver for about 1/2 the price.

Don't be such a tightwad and get fitted. There are a lot of places where you live that can fit you. The only people i know that use a 10.5 drivers are females. Do u have a sex change operation that we all didnt know about?

I have been fitted. I had a HIGH ball flight and a lot of back spin also. I have had good success with a heavier shaft. My current driver is a Taylormade R7 Superquad with a UST Proforce V2 shaft (77 grams). I am pretty happy with it and how you can move the weights around if you wish. I can only get an occasional 300 drive. I would say i average 270 yards. Not bad for a non PGA pro.

PS Seraphim you still owe me a round after my back recovery.

Speaking of drivers and shafts, I heard "The Rocket" Clemons was doing a "grip it and rip it" on John Daly's ex-wife.
