Default Official Dodger Prospects Thread

I figured we might as well start a thread where we can talk about Dodger prospects. I'll type of BA profiles from the handbook I bought, any post the Callis chat wraps in this thread.

Since we start new Dodger threads every month some prospect stuff might get lost so we might as well have it all in one thread.

DeWitt has a smooth, repeatable lefthanded swing that creates consistent hard contact and enables him to keep his hands inside the ball. He can let balls travel deep and get enough extension to drive them out of the park. His pitch recognition and plate discipline also contribute to his above-average feel for hitting. He's an adequate defender with a solid-average arm. He has an even temperament and good makeup. He's streaky as a hitter and his approach vacillates. He can get himself out by expanding the strike zone, thought it's usually by hitting pitcher's pitches as opposed to swinging and missing. He has 35 speed on the 20-80 scouting scale but runs better once underway. DeWitt's supporters cite the development of James Loney, who also didn't consistently hit for power in the minors. If he continues to improve, DeWitt could compete for a major league role in 2009 and develop into a .280-.290 hitter with 15-20 homers per year.

Any LaRoche, Hu, Kershaw, Mattingly, Elbert, McDonald write-ups would be sweet.

The one Dodger prospect I'm looking at is Jaime Pedroza. He's one hell of a ballplayer and comes from good bloodlines. I knew his brother from his days at Fullerton. Anyways, he played SS in college but if you ask me, I think he'd make a better second baseman. He sort of reminds me of Dustin Pedroia.

We probably won't see him for a couple of years but if he is moved to 2B, then how sweet would an infield of LaRoche at 3B, Hu at SS, Pedroza at 2B and Loney at 1b, be?

He's probably not listed very high on prospect writeups right now but I have seen this kid play and like I said before, the kid can play.

Pedroza doesn't make the top 30 but he does get mention as the Dodgers sleeper prospect of 2008. Here's what they write:

Here's some info on a 2 Mexican pitchers we signed this off-season.

Quote:
Could you tell me a little about Mexican lefthander Javier Solano. The Dodgers' official website reported they signed him earlier this year for $250,000. What's the scouting report on him?

Jason Debney
Burbank, Calif.

I recently read an article that said Dodgers lefthander Javier Solano was considered the best pitching prospect in Mexico when the Dodgers signed him for $250,000 earlier this year as a 17-year-old, and that he has an above-average fastball and curveball. Do you have any information about Solano? Is he a legitimate prospect, and where does it look like he'll play this season?

Marty Rafter
Heidelberg, Germany

The Dodgers did buy Solano's rights from the Mexican League's Monterrey Sultans earlier this winter for $250,000. He's 17 years old but he's actually a righthander, not a lefty. Solano has a mature body at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, but he's more athletic than that build might indicate. Los Angeles loves his mechanics, pitchability and confidence.

His stuff is promising too. Solano's two best pitches are an 89-93 mph fastball that sits around 91 and a plus 75-78 mph curveball. He also has some feel for a changeup and uses a slider as his fourth offering.

Solano has been very impressive in minor league camp, pitching well enough to merit making the Dodgers' low Class A Great Lakes club. But given his age and inexperience, as well as the cold early-season weather in the Midwest League, Los Angeles will keep Solano in extended spring training for at least the first month of the season.

The Dodgers also paid $250,000 to the Sultans for the rights to another pitcher, 19-year-old righthander Freddy Quintero. Quintero, who's 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, has an 89-92 mph fastball and a hard slider.

Everyone's favorite 3B prospect. Except maybe Ned Colletti!

#2 Andy LaRoche

Andy entered spring training in competition for for Los Angeles' third-base job, but went 11-for-51 without a homer in big league camp and spent most of the season at Triple-A Las Vegas. He had left shoulder surgery after the 2006 season, which might have precipitated his slow start, and he battles back soreness in 2007 as well.

LaRoche has plus raw power and a good feel for hitting. When he gets his arms extended, balls fly off his bat to all fields. He lets balls travel deep and has the bat speed to catch up to the best of fastballs. He has advanced pitch recognition and commands the strike zone well when he stays within himself. He's a slightly below-average defender with a solid-average arm.

LaRoche's approach was inconsistent last season. He as overly patient at times when he first got to the majors in May, then chased ablls out of teh zone in his second try with the Dodgers in September. He also gets pull-happy at the plate. He's a below average runner with unexceptional range defensively. Los Angeles would like to see him take his preparation more seriously.

His injury history is more extensive than he or the club would like. LaRoche profiles as an every day third baseman with the potential to bat in the middle of a lineup. The Dodgers haven't been able to fill the hole at third base since Adrian Beltre left in 2005, and LaRoche should finally get his opportunity this season.

ASU or anybody else, any information on Kyle Orr? He seemed like an intriguing pick, especially since we drafted him in the 4th round. I haven't heard anything recently, but I do see that BA lists him as a catcher now...
