Going to arbitration worries me. If Rodriguez hits the free agent market the Yankees will pick him up. No way the Angels can compete with that. Also, I'll be out an Angels jersey since my newest one has good old #57 on the back. Damnit!
K-Rod is a very good closer but it wouldn't be the end of the world for the Angels.
Great closers are invaluable, but it is not a hard position to fill. I'm not saying it is easy, but it's easier to find a solid closer than it is a front of the line rotation guy.
I think the position has been overrated. Yea, the Yankees have won a bunch of titles with Mariano Riveria shutting the door, but the Cards won a World Series with Adam Wainright at the end of game.
The last time the Marlins won the title they didn't have a closer until the deadline when they picked up Ugeth Urbina. The D-Backs won a world series with Byung Yung Kim!
Having a great closer like Mariano is a great weapon, but capable closers can be found from year to year. They're not exactly rare.

(Note: Dodgers, Braves and Cardinals fans everywhere are nodding and saying, "Yup ... been there, done that.")

He's been chomping at the bit to get big money for sometime now. I just hope he doesn't come out of arbitration so bitter he wants to leave no matter what they offer him next off season.
I hear they're trying Juan Rivera at 1st base, hoping it'll get his bat into the line up more.
They're not looking to put Rivera at 1st full time, come on now. But to expect Kotchman to play every game in a season on a team with this much bench depth is kinda crazy. Juan's a righty & Kotchman is a lefty and they're obviously not satisfied with the development of Morales. You'd rather squeeze Rivera's bat into the lineup than Quinlan. It's just reshuffling the depth behind Kotchman because the OF is very crowded.

It is a very good thing for Angel fans (that's me) that Frankie lost the arbitration. It sets the starting point for negotiations on an extension. Had he won the starting point would be 12.5 mil in an offer resembling Mariano Rivera's 3/45. I doubt that offer would ever be made. At least now they can start with an offer in the 3/36 range and go from there.
His comments make it seem that he is being mature about the arbitration loss, at least publicly.
One more thing. If he insists on 4 or more years, bye-bye. I am hoping it works out but if it doesn't I am fully prepared to move on and I'm positive that the Angels are as well.
I love k-rod and he's often looked at as the best in the game but when he's on the mound it is a rollercoaster ride. I'd be fine with shields or spier.
They can groom Santana to replace him for all i care. My gut feeling is he walks after this season no matter what the Angels offer him. If 10 mil a year to pitch as little as he does, and maybe pitching well 75% of that time, i say let him walk.
Arms are not in short supply within the Angels organization.

With this being a contract year, I'm looking for K-Rod to have a helluva season.
Agree with that. Guys always have their career years when it's time to get paid. I'd love for Frankie to stay but if he wants a ton of money I think we've got to let him walk.
Angels have enough to win the West this year, no problem, but do we have enough to handle the Sox or Cleveland in the post season? I'm not to sure.
