The fact that SD is pretty terrible probably has something to do with it. He has a club option at 9 million they can exercise but they probably think they can get something of value for him. Not really that surprising.

If you consider what Towers had said about what Giles would command, I'm surprised they would have made the move after not making much of an attempt trading him before the deadline.
"We're flirting with a number of things, even moving Manny to third," said Torre. "The nine-hole hitter gives you three guys to get on. We would have [Juan] Pierre batting ninth. We haven't gone there yet."
I don't want any part of Kent and his OPS+ of 82 anywhere near the cleanup spot, Manny or no Manny.
So who hits 3rd? The catcher? Martin burned out last year and his OPS has fallen from .870 on July 1st to .803 as of today August 7th. The signs are there that he's getting tired and there's no way Torre lets him sit much with the D-backs within reach and 6 weeks left in the season. Loney? Kemp? Blake? Maybe Nomar if he can get healthy again? The options aren't exactly world beaters with a great track record of hitting in the 3 hole.
Good win. Atlanta certainly isn't good but they have to be better than the post-deadline Pirates. Maybe they can get a split with AZ and help out the Dodgers a bit. Dodgers need to win 2 or 3 against the Giants considering they don't have to face Lincecum.

Ideally Kemp. If not I'm fine with Loney batting third. You say these guys aren't world beaters but your willing to throw Kent back into the cleanup spot based what on what? What he's done in the past? He's not the same hitter he was even last year. I don't see how that is a smart move.
Another TJ article. And he's STILL stickin' it to JP.

CHECKED IN with Juan Pierre, back in the lineup and contributing a run-scoring triple. I wanted to know if the Dodgers were still
"sticking it" to him as he had said in the newspaper?
"I don't read the paper, bro," and obviously so, because the name isn't bro.
"I don't care what anyone thinks; I got one man upstairs, only one," he said, while pointing to the heavens. "I'm quite sure people don't like me anyway. You probably don't like me."
I agreed. I told him I found him short on humor and joy, while separating himself from everyone on the team and coming across self-centered when everyone's excited about Ramirez's arrival.
"I didn't say [the Dodgers] were sticking it to me," he said. "I'm sticking it to myself by not playing well."
I agreed, and he grinned -- so he's capable of doing so.
