About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Well, who is it and why?
Each Stanley Cup winning team had some backup goalie that likely also won the Cup.
If you factor in those goalies, the list grows and contains a hell of a lot of crappy goalies.
Yeah, I agree, that's why I'd keep it to starters.
I knew Oz would get brought up. The fact that he's playing pretty well now is the only counter-punch, though still a weak one. Who knows, could turn out to be Cam Ward (though he was stellar in the Cup he won). To think, it could have been Kelly Hrudey.
Gerry Cheevers and Ed Johnston split both regular season AND playoff duties... Esposito, Bucyk and Orr were as pretty damn close as you can get to the offensive firepower that Barrasso had with his cup teams in Pittsburgh... Tom's goaltending numbers were really damn high, but that was near the end of a really high scoring era, so...
perhaps Cam Ward in Carolina... stepped up big as a rookie and eventually took the starting job away from Gerber, who just seemed to finally come down to earth a little after a good regular season.
the Hurricanes didn't have the greatest defense, so that's a plus. i still think though that Cam is a bit over rated.

you might as well say fuhr, brodur or Roy.....they had some bad games.
in recent memory why not say vernon?? after doing research...
The most unlikely Cup-winning goaltenders were probably Frank McCool (Toronto, 1945) and Andy Aitkenhead (Rangers, 1933). McCool played two seasons and Aitkenhead three in the NHL. Those are the shortest careers for any Cup-winning goaltender.

Osgood being on the list should not be a surprise. Barrasso won a Calder, a Vezna, a silver medel, a Jennings trophy, and two Cups. Despite his less than stellar stats, he has some serious credentials, but he does not measure up to legends like Roy or Brodeur, or even Fuhr. Vernon is in Barrasso's league, Osgood is not. Good on ya for the research, that's way before my time.
just curious......does anyone else think vernon or osgood might be the worst even to win the cup in recent memory (lets say last 20 years)....
look at the teams they played on, count the all stars, future/current HOFers. clouts could have won back to back cups if he was luckey enough to land in detrout between 98-00.
There definately isn't anyone as far down the totem pole as Trent Dilfer's name is among NFL QB's.
In the last 20 years, I'd say either Osgood or maybe Ranford. I still think it's too early to write the book on Cam Ward, but 10 years from now we might be going, "how the eeeef did he do that in 2006?"
