Is there any predictability as to when TV time outs are called?
The reason why I ask is I was just watching the Calgary and Detroit game on Versus, and late in the 2nd the Red Wings were on back to back PP's with great sustained pressure, and as the PP was ending the Flames were called for another penalty, and they went to a TV timeout. I feel this was a great advantage for the Flames as they were able to rest there PK unit who were totally out of gas.
They are called after the first stoppage following 6, 10, and 14 minutes into the period (after the 14:00, 10:00, and 6:00) marks UNLESS the stoppage comes while a PP is going on or there was a goal scored which caused the stoppage in time.

You must be talking about this right?
Calgary high sticking - 2 min 14:49, D. Phaneuf
Calgary hooking - 2 min 17:02, E. Nystrom
If that's the case... then the TV Timeout is perfectly fine. When Phaneuf's peantly was over... there would be 3:11 left in the period. So there's the TV timeout.
Nystrom didn't get his penatly until there was 2:58 remaining. Back-to-Back PPs? Sure, but there's technically a gap in between. So the television timeout is okay to me.
Usually, they'would do the TV Timeout with under 6 minutes left... but as you can see... there were all sorts of penalties in between.
Detroit roughing - 2 min 13:10, J. Hudler

Wow, nice job with the breakdown! that is exactly what I was talking about.
I never paid much attention to the TV timeouts before. Thanks for all the info.
Also keep in mind what borinka said too. So just look for the 14:00 mark, 10 minute mark, and 6 minute mark. And you'll know when a TV timeout is coming up, as long as there's no PP in between or a goal scored.
At Staples center, there is a red light that is on that signals for the referees to go into TV timeout beside the penalty box, so you know when to get ready to sprint to the restroom.

And for all of the sight-challenged LGKers out there, the short double whistle also signals the timeout.
