Fricken' Wolvie!
you got it twisted tho... see your looking at from an average joe point of view..
this is the all star game and tons of people voted him in. people have paid money to watch him play you cant just all of a sudden 'call in sick' because you dont feel like playing and miss your pregnant wife... should've thought of that earlier.
to you the game is meaningless but how about the people putting money into it that actually paid to see Luongo in the game and skills competition? they are meaningless too right? believe it or not, people actually really enjoy the all star game (and to some *gasp* its actually a big deal) and vote guys in for in a reason. if he didn't want to play he should've taken himself off the ballot.
hockey is just a game, but when its the NHL, its a business. that's bad business.
so you can get all high and mighty and start trying to put the caps on because we all know CAPS REALLY MAKE THE POINT, but it still doesn't change the fact.
..and as far as Leykis.. it's entertainment.. take it as that. the guy obviously acts ultra controversial to get this exact type of reaction out of people which equals big ratings and is the reason he's #1 in his time slot. people just take this sh** too seriously.
You are correct sir!
He gets paid to stir the pot and obviously he hit a nerve on this one.
YOUR PREGNANT WIFE >>>>>>>> MEANINGLESS GLORIFIED EXHIBITION GAME
True, and it's not like Luongo could've seen this coming. It's not like Luongo would've had an inkling he'd be voted into the all-star game. It's not like his wife has been pregnant for months. It's not like they both knew what they were getting into when they got married. It's not like there are other players in the same position who will be playing regardless.
But who am I to complain? I'm just a sad, desperate, bitter, homely, worthless, decrepit, typical single male.

you know the one question that nobody has asked that someone should ask?
Why the **** is the bitch in Florida?
Dude pulls down $6mil a season. He couldn't have rented a house in Vancouver and flown the chick out sometime like....LAST YEAR?
If he is so adamant about making quality time for his wife then what the hell are they doing some 5000 miles apart? It's not like the greasy douchebag can't afford it.
Family takes priority over everything. It's not as if he's missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Leykis needs to lighten the **** up. My guess is he doesn't have kids.
I guessed a lot of this but had to find a source to confirm. Sounds like Gina Luongo has had some pregnancy issues and she's living in Florida because she's from Ft. Lauderdale and that's where she has a support system. (OrangePuck, an NHL goaltender is not a great support system when you're pregnant.)
As for UnholyGoalie's opinion that Luongo should have warned people he wouldn't attend before the voting... seriously? "I called this press conference to tell you all that, even though I haven't been picked for the All-Star Game yet, I won't go if you vote for me because I need to spend time with my pregnant wife." If he's getting ripped now, imagine what people would have said about his ego.

support system = mom and dad
Sorry but no way, regardless of what job I have, is my wife living that far away from me. If I made that sort of money I'd use it to see to it that my wife had everything she needed, including me. Lots of moms and dads in the real world move in with a pregnant daughter to help out. I've seen it done numerous times.
I know I'm being overly critical and quite frankly I can care less if he's at the game or not. After reading the story I just think he and his wife made some bad choices and now the organization has to accomodate him thanks to his moronic decision making.
edit...
Also, I've been married and know first hand what being apart or a lack of communication can do to a marraige. If he really is interested in being a good husband then he needs to start with keeping her close to home no matter what.
That's part of it. Pregnant women often have/need a veritable entourage...

Well, I'm not sure I agree, as to do so would require making lots of assumptions about the whole situation, but I can certainly understand where you're coming from.

Yeah, but even if he did move her closer, he's still gone the majority of the time. The support system should be full-time. They made the right decision.

You're preaching to the choir.
As a guy with a strange work schedule and demanding hours, I can sympathize.
Has anyone thought that besides her family as her support system in Florida, maybe all of her doctors are there.
I'm sure Luongo could afford to ship her whole family, but if you have a specific doctor that you want taking care of you and youre future child, you're going to stay close to that doctor.
That being said, if you really care, write a flippin letter to the Cancucks, seriously. I'm sure it will do a lot more good than posting here about how women are dumb for being pregnant and marrying a pro athlete.

My response wasn't really to you. I was just adding to it. I like reading your posts, they're one of the few that make sense.
This whole situation with Luongo is no one's business but his and the Canucks. This could have been decided long before he was ever nominated to the ASG. And in reality, who really knows they'll be elected anyway.
The real problem I have with this is it's really easy to protect your children without listening to the hatred Leykis spews. I have a grandson that will be taught to protect his assets, because my daughter and I both know that SOME females out there that are out for whatever they can get, when what they need is a good kick in the a$$. If alot of parents taught their kids simple responsibility, there wouldn't be any need for all of this hatred between the sexes. My daughter and I also know, first hand, that there are alot of really nasty guys out there, but that hasn't made us hate the whole species.

Yes. Seriously. Why would he need to call a press conference? Just tell the team and the head offices that he doesn't intend to play. I'm sure it's been done before. It saves the fans wasted time and the votes that could go to other players who would be thrilled to play.
I don't understand why that is such a radical idea.
