Yes, the equipment needs to be changed... not because of a need to increase offense, but because the game should be a competition of athleticism and skill... not the equipment that best covers the five-hole or swallows the rebounds.

Very good point and I do agree. That is why there are already regulations on equipment, and slight changes might be in order. However, the emphasis on skill and athleticism is not the goal or concern of the group, or the article on TSN. The NHL, and NHLPA have already hindered puck handling net minders skill set by diminishing there ability to play the puck in the corners with a trapazoid. Skill and athleticism does not seem to be too big of a concern for the powers that be.

Fair enough, but just because I disagree with their endgame doesn't mean I have to disagree with what they're doing about it

Using this same argument it could be said that composite sticks are pieces of equipment that enhance the ability of the player above and beyond what should be allowed. Make the players go back to wood sticks with straight edges. The players should show their skill.

Just playing a little bit of devils advocate. I do agree that the goalie equipment should be minimized to the point of giving maximum protection to the player without enhancing the ability of the player beyond what is their natural skill. I don't want to see the Michelin Man, Stay Puff Man or the Pillsbury Dough Boy in net.

I'd be fine with players using wood sticks, but let's look at the purpose of the stick vs. the purpose of the pads:

The sticks are there to provide the players a means to score. They, too, are regulated. They can't surpass a particular curve (any Kings fan is sadly aware of this). The composite sticks help the players score a little bit, but they're not designed so much to greatly take away the NEED for skill and talent.

The pads are there to provide the goalies a means to protect themselves. Now, the pads aren't form fitting; the legs pads are rectangular-ish and extend beyond the contours of the leg, the blocker's wider than the arm, the glove extends beyond the fingers; the pads aren't designed to make the goalie depend 100% on just being in the right place at the right time.

Again, I'd be fine either way, but I think the pads make stopping shots a lot easier than sticks make scoring shots. Just my opinion, of course.

The "tenders of today are making a mockery of the position. Roy and Snow can shake hands they are the ones who started this mess. Now every F...ing NHL team is looking for a 6-8 'tender to man the crease. The 'tenders don't even have to cut down the angle anymore. All they have to do is make the shot hit them. I'm for putting the Rogie Vachon pads on every son of bitch that donns the equipment. Then and only then can 'tenders be judged and the game be fair and square. Long live the Shut-out mark 103. Long live the 15 shut-out mark or is it 22...Love to see blasts from the point go in top shelf. Love to see wingers barrelling down the side, blow by the flat-footed D-man and fire a howitzer past the stunned and dumbfounded 'tender...bring back the 4-3, 5-4, 6-5, 7-6 games, I loved them. Love to see NHL lineups scattered with 50, 60, 70 goal scorers. Every team should have at least one 50 goal scorer. And NHL teams( the good ones should score at a 4-4.5 clip). I can just see the LA Kings in a few years pile up the goals...Kopitar 50,Frolov 45, Brown 40,O'Sullivan 35, Boyle 30, Cammalleri 40...

With witnessing last nights Dallas/San Jose game, there is absolutely no reason to increase scoring what so ever. Give me a low scoring game that has big hits, end to end action, and great saves over a 7-5 or 7-6 game any day of the week. Sure those games are fun from time to time, but a low scoring game is more exciting to me.

The final score of any given match, regardless of the sport or game, has little to do with the relative enjoyment to be had from watching said match.
