ok...if you are going to do away with the trapezoid...then do away with the whole rule. And allow goalies who play the puck well to do what it is they do best. Look, I know I am a Devils homer...but we all know that the trapezoid was initiated primarily as a 'Brodeur-rule'.

The goalies have their crease. Outside that area they should be in play. If Broduer wants to play the puck... then he should be vulnerable to a bodycheck.

I agree, but Bettman has handcuffed good puck-playing goalies...If a team dumps in from their own zone, a decent puck-handling goalie should be able to coast into the corner and move the puck...it would eliminate a lot of the dump-n-chase mentality. Yes, a goalie should be open to contact if they stray from the crease...but they should also be able to control the corners and not be confined to a small area.

What happens when a goalie leaves the crease to challenge a shot? Would you body check him? Probably not, because that would be interference...BUT what about after he makes the save? Can you check him when he is trying to corral a rebound? No, and that is most likely why that rule would not be removed.
You might be able to allow body checks on goalies when they are below the goal line.

Making Goalies fair game is ...not a good idea because then it would be open season to maim ,injure, kill...Did I say kill...then we would have bedlam and chaos not to mention bench clearing brawls and who wants that. Then every team would be forced to bring up the 3rd, 4th and 5th string 'tenders to mind to crease...Bad idea man!
the whole argument is pointless...the way things used to be were good, where good puck-handlers could negate the ****ty dump'n'chase play that goes on around the league. It was a simple evolution, good goalies learned when and how to play the puck...for example Brodeur(of course), Turco and a handful of others. But Herr Bettman in his never ending battle to destroy the integrity of the game punished these superior goalies who learned how to do their jobs better. So five years from now, when the game has been changed to the point where new nhl = arena football league...and new fans still haven't come flocking aboard/old fans lose interest we will all look fondly back on the game at a time when defense was just as important as offense. Change for the sake of change is never good. Why have rules when, if a team finds a way to excel within the confines of these rules...you just change the rules. It's reactionary and it cheapens the sport.

Gee, you think the refs might be able to tell the difference between a goalie that is trying to corral a rebound and one that is out on the half boards stick handling the puck?
I think the goalies should be forced to wear skirts.
