(Naysay) Ancient Format - Cup Winner vs. League of Stars
In the spirit of the Olympics (Summer games, at that), I thought I'd raise this question.
Would you prefer the current format of the all-star game (East vs. West) or should the NHL revert back to the format used from 98 to 02 and currently used in the AHL and play the game as North America vs. World. OR! Should the game be played by the Cup Winner playing the rest of the league?
Personally, I enjoy the North America vs. World game a lot more.
Something like:
Ovechkin-Malkin-Hossa
Kovalchuk-Alfredsson-Zetterberg
Datsyuk-Kopitar-Gaborik
H. Sedin-Kovalev-Filatov
(I didn't give much thought to the selections or the lines so don't focus on that...of course, I did include a few Kings there. )
At the request of Dr. Naysay's, I've added a third option, that being the ancient format of the 50's and 60's where the Cup winner would play the stars of the rest of the league.

I voted for #2, NA vs. Europe. It would be the most interesting option for the players and as a consequence, the most interesting game for the people watching it. The current AS game is boring.

Good luck getting Ovechkin on the same line as Malkin.
If I had to rank them, it'd be this-
1. East Vs. West
2. All-Stars Vs. Stanley Cup Champs
3. N.A. Vs. World
Really though, I only like East Vs. West. N.A. Vs. World has folks on the same team playing against each other. I know the game is meaningless, but come on. As for SC Champs Vs. All-Stars, that could be interesting. It'd also make the SC Champs play one more game than they usually would. All things considered though, I'd stick with East Vs. West or better yet, Campbell Vs. Wales!

i would definately want World versus N.A. the only reason that it's east vs west, is so it'll be easier to select an all-star from every team IMHO

Small sample size aside, exactly how is NA vs. the World winning?
They still have this format in the AHL (Canada vs. the World) and it is boring. Say you've got Kopitar on the World team, and Brown and O'Sullivan on North America. Who are you rooting for? Going to divide your cheering interests? All it does is make the game one "meh"-fest.
If you want to change things for the sake of change, go with the Naysay option.

Still less boring than the current problem probably... who are you rooting for in West vs. East game: the team that doesn't care at all or the team that cares even less. I think that with NA vs. Europe players would care more.

would you prefer the atrocity that is major league baseball and let the allstar game decide home ice advantage in the cup finals?
I'll take Naysay's ancient format but add one thing to spice it up. If the cup-winning team doesn't beat the rest of the league, they're automagically eliminated from the following playoffs and therefore can't repeat.

I say no to that particular change...
but how about this...
if they DO win... they get home ice advantage throughout the playoffs even if their ranking doesn't warrant it.

Hell no. The All-Star game should have no bearing on the actual league at all. It should be a chance for the best players in the league to get together and show off their talent so that fans can see them all, and nothing more. Having the All-Star game affect the ****ing playoffs is stupid as hell. The only thing that should affect your team in the playoffs is the way your team plays during the regular schedule. The way the MLB does it is just horrible.
Keep East vs. West. I would prefer going back to the conferences and divisions being named like they used to be though.
