About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. I think this is complete B.S! There is a reason the cap is in place and rules should be set in place for this kind of crap not to happen.
I think this is complete B.S! There is a reason the cap is in place and rules should be set in place for this kind of crap not to happen. Players need to decide in the start of the season if they want to come back or retire, if not they can sit out for the whole season. I don't care what team the player is on, it's just not right.

I hate that the rules allow this to happen. This loophole is just more evidence of the lack of sportsmanship and sense of fair play that is missing in most professional sports today.
More alarming is the lack of willingness to act on what a majority of posters here can see so clearly. See the comments below made by the NHL's three "leading" (I didn't say they were good leaders....they suck!) officers
Here's how the NHL's three leading officers answered the question in Atlanta during All-Star weekend.
"He (Selanne) obviously felt he needed some time off and I wouldn't second guess that for a minute," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "If this were to become a trend, I would have concerns."
(Yeah let's wait and see; history is littered with this little blunder)
"I think there are a lot of aspects to that issue that you have to look at," said Colin Campbell, a senior VP and director of hockey operations. "One of them would be how do players come back in the fold on a team that's already established. My guess right now is it's not going to become a trend."
(Don't look at it, it will go away! Yep, more of history's litter)
"It's a unique situation," deputy commissioner Bill Daley said. "Obviously the league and the fans of the league are pleased to have Scott Niedermayer back because he's a great player, but there are implications to somebody sitting out during contract. There are cap implications, competitive implications. … and that's why if it ever did become a trend, something we saw more often, it would be something that would raise concerns."
(Another with his head in the sand...a wholesale restructure or firing at the highest levels of the NHL is needed.)
While I hate the ducks as any self-respecting King's fan should...I don't blame the Ducks exclusively for this exploitation of a loophole in the leagues rule. I blame the league for not examining this closely in light of the possible unfair advantage that this allows the Ducks this season. It is yet another cheap shot that the Ducks seem to excel.
I would feel the same way about this topic if ANY team in the league did this...not just the Ducks. It is BS!
I'll be straight up with you people and if someone gets butthurt all I can say is no hard feelings but if you don't agree with me then you are an idiot.
1. You guy have every right to be bent about Scott Niedermayer sitting out a portion of the season regardless of whether it was or was't planned.
2. You have no right, and quite frankly, you are a full blown idiot if you have a problem with Teemu Selanne coming back when he did.
Most of you won't care to know why but I'll be happy to discuss this with anyone with an open mind. The rest of you can just go back to crying like little bitches.
you know what really sucks about this is that last year when we needed labarbra to come up we couldnt chance him having to go through waivers. but selanne can just come back any time he wants.
i was just wondering from ORANGEPUCK what the difference is between niedermayer coming back opposed to selanne coming back. i was wondering why you understand about fans being mad about scott coming back but why fans are idiots about selanne coming back.
he also called both me and Teemu f**s in so many words... didja catch that one?
Tell me that you didn't take my "Selanne will suck anyway." post seriously? Please, no more people like Byatch with zero sense for what's meant seriously and what's not.
I'm well aware that Ducks are a big step closer to winning it again with Selanne on the roster.
(I know there's possibility of your post not being serious, but it's a bit hard to decide on this one...)

it's incredibly simple really and I'm shocked that people can't rinse the sand out of their vaginas long enough to figure it out.
I understand being upset about Niedermayer to a degree because he was under contract. If a contract is signed I can respect someone feeling that a player should honor the terms of the contract that was signed. However, I stop at the point where some of you think that this was some sort of handshake agreement between Burke and Niedermayer. Why? Well, as far as Niedermayer is concerned this little respite cost him a good $3mil or so in personal income. As far as the team is concerned THEY LOST ANDY McDONALD. Surely if this was planned from the start I doubt that Burke signs Bertuzzi or Schneider because he would have had the foresight to know that it would cause him to lose a player form his roster once Scott Nidermayer came back.
As for Selanne he was an UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT. This means that he is available for any of the 30 teams that he chooses to play for. He has a right to earn a living and a right to earn that living where he wants to earn it. For those of you that think that he should go through waivers...you're idiots...he's an UFA. For those of you that think that there should be a cut off date early in the season what about a player that retires due a late season injury that doens't heal until November? What if that player decided he can still go another year? Will he be denied a chance to return to the team he was contracted to or to sign with a team if he is an UFA?
The only hard line rule that the league can implement is a rule against allowing a player under Niedermayer's situation to return after a certain cut off date early in the season. So, if you are under contract, healthy and fail to report to camp then you can implement a cutoff date early in the season.
If you want a rule to keep a person from doing what Selanne did then you are requiring the league to shut the door prematurely on some players who don't know if they can play. It could be due to medical reasons (Forsberg) or personal reasons. UFA's should have a significant amount of slack in this regard.
Also, I think a lot of you are ****ing hyocrites and I will tell you why. Several King fans were very complimentary of the San Jose organization because they had a video tribute for Luc Robitaille on the final game of the season a couple of years back. Also, a lot of King fans were complimentary of the fans for being classy and acknowledging Robitaille with a standing ovation. However, now that the shoe is on the other foot these same grateful King fans can't extend the same graciousness and respect for a first ballot hall of famer because he plays for the Ducks. It's ****ing ridicuouls.
I'm sure that I'll get several responses saying simple minded **** like "Well, Luc never took half a season off" or "Luc wasn't a diver" Boo-****ing-hoo....anyone that comes back with that can suck my hairy nut purse and toss my smelly salad. If you can't see what San Jose did for Luc and pay that forward then you can just go **** off.
Not gonna lie. Can't argue with the man on this one.
His point about the class-lessness towards Teemu is somewhat valid too. I was at the game where he scored his 1000th point or some other milestone, I quite frankly forget which, against the kings in Anaheim and hey, I stood up and clapped. Teemu's a nice guy and a great hockey player, regardless of which sweater he wears. I can say the same thing about Denis Potvin. Or Brodeur. Or Rick DiPietro. Its just class and being mature. In any event, Im standing there clapping mildly in my Kings gear, and two Kings fans in front of me and over start flipping off the ice and turned their backs. These werent 17 year old douchebags either; these were grown men. I mean, I know each team has these sorts of dip****s, but I kind of think (and hope) that once you reach a certain point in your hockey fandom you shy away from that sort of behavior.
that said, I ****ing hate Teemu's palms-up, shoulders shrugged, I DIDNT DO IT!! wahh wahh look he always gives refs.
