The one thing that really erks me about Avery is his lack of respect for his fellow players. This antic is just that, showing no respect for another player. Avery should of been professional about the screen and not do those stupid hand waving antics.
When I was young, if I or anyone else on my bantem team would of done that we would of been benched and possibly kicked off the team.
A huge part of Hockey is respecting your opponents, and Avery has no respect for anyone.
It's a shame that a player of his skill has to act so childish and unprofessional.
I think facing the goalie and screening him with your body is cool, but waiving your stick in his face like you might slash him is another. He's creative...........ya gotta give him that. Hes the only person in the league stupid enough to try it in the existence of the league. If theres no rule against it.......its fair game. The league should take steps to make the slashing motion of the stick illegal but the newly established screening method by Avery should be allowed.
I'll give you that, and that's why Drury told him to keep his stick down. But facing the goalie and getting into his head? I see no problem with that at all.
National Hockey League Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell issued a statement Monday to make the league's position clear going forward. The statement said:
"An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play."
So if anyone tried Avery's ploy again, it will be a two-minute penalty.
I personally miss Avery. ANd according to all the jersey's with his name on the back at any given game, alot of other people do to. Yes, his mouth is a bit much...Kinda like the MIlton Bradley that was once with the Dodgers, but who else would pick a fight with everyone on the Ducks including Hazy! We are missing that physical toughness that we have had in the past. Before Avery it was Tony and so on...

Galileo and the Vatican all over again, I'm telling ya...
If I'm Marty B, I'd much rather have this clown ignoring the play and screening me instead of screening me and actually looking for a deflection or a rebound.

Did you read what Brodeur had to say about it?

"While he was doing it, I couldn't see anything. The two misses were just luck, I couldn't see a thing."
Avery's still talking **** about Brodeur's divorce? He can't hear him with the 3 cup rings in his ears.
Ah, the old Patrick Roy defense. Marty's got a bit more class that Roy, then again, who doesn't? I'd love to see Avery do that with Roy. 2 a$$h0les in each's faces.

You know what's funny? No one is thinking what's Brodeur's opinion of all this. I read somewhere, I think it was NY Newsday, that Brodeur actually thought it was a great play on Avery's part. Class I tell ya.
