"The Rocket" DVD is the story of Maurice "The Rocket" Richard's struggle to rise above the poverty in blue-collar Quebec to become a spokesman for French-Canadians and also the "Babe Ruth of Hockey". The story follows the soft-spoken Richard's trials to overcome discrimination in the NHL during the 1950's and also his struggles on the ice to survive the league during the days when intimidation was part of the game and the referees looked the other way.
In one of the key scenes, the Canadiens take a train to New York and are met by none other than Sean Avery, who is their team thug and wants to inflict pain on the Rocket. After being pretty low key in the press and on the ice, Richard finally is fed up with the mistreatment and takes it out on Mr. Avery to begin his battle for respect for himself as well as his fellow French-speaking Canadians.
Lucky for us, there's an English language overdub so that we can get a glimpse into history as told by the French-Canadians to their own kind. After holding his frustrations in for way too long, Richard also opens up in the press and speaks his mind about the discrimination. He also takes out his on-ice frustrations with a stick chop that earned him a suspension from the Stanley Cup Finals, sparking off race riots in Montreal.
The DVD is available now the USA on PALM PICTURES.
