According to a report in the Washington Post, Kolzig will not be returning to the team that drafted him in 1989. Instead, Kolzig's Capitals career seems to have ended with him watching the team lose to the Philadelphia Flyers in the Game 7 of their first round playoff series from the bench.
"For me, it was disappointing the way it ended," Kolzig told the Post. "It's unfortunate, because they have a good team here now. It's a fantastic team, fantastic group of guys. Not to be a part of that is going to be tough, especially after 17 years and three years of what we went through post-lockout."
Thoughts?
Also, gotta like this guys attitude:

"I haven't completely made up my mind," Kolzig said. "For me, it's all about my family. The situation has to be good for my family. I still feel that I can be a dominant goalie in this league. If the offer is not out there . . . I'll just sit by the pool with a six-pack."
Hell yes, Kolzig. I feel bad for the guy, I don't think anyone will probably pick him up either. It's possible, but I don't see it happening. I could see him getting offered a desk job from the Caps if he doesn't though.

I remember Kolzig when I was saying "who's that guy?" pointing to the goalie on the bench backing up Jim Carey. Kolzig is part of a dying breed of one team/franchise players. Hasn't been too many in recent history (Sakic, Yzerman, Brodeur, Modano, Lidstrom to name a few). I'm sure he's got some life left in him but it can't be too much at this point. Whatever he chooses, I'm sure it's the right decision.

i get the sense that his decision is directly tied to the fact that he was supplanted by huet. if thats the case, it is highly unlikely that he will sign to be a back up. that makes it very hard to match him up with a team. tb may be a good fit since their goaltending has been worse than ours since khabi left. if he is willing to earn his spot, then ottawa may be a possibility when emery is shipped out. on solid defensive team, kolzig may still have enough to be a difference maker.
still its sad to see him leave the caps. prior to this year, it looked like he was going to eventually retire a cap.
