Oh man, I just don't like seeing these pictures. Still to this day, anytime I hear Clint Malarchuk's name I think of the video and I shiver. I think I'm going to send Richard a message on that link to the Panthers page. I just feel so bad for the guy. I sure hope he has a full recovery.

He is so lucky that he could skate off the ice. If he had fallen to the ice it would taken a lot longer to get him strapped to a stretcher and things fixed up.
From the article, it states that the skate didn't cut entirely though the artery and that it was still partially connected.
Had it been completely severed, complications could have made things tougher.

Attending surgeon Sonya Noor said there were no initial signs of brain damage, which is a fear whenever the coratid artery is clamped. She said clamps were in place for about 15 to 20 minutes during surgery, which she considers a short time.
...
According to Noor, the slashed artery was "hanging by a thread." She stressed if the artery had been completely severed it would have recessed into the neck, requiring even more extensive surgery.

Reading the comments on the espn story, a lot of people are not only suggesting that knee-jerk reactions shouldn't be done and that adding protection to players necks will increase the violence in hockey. I find that last part asinine. Who the hell would initiate contact with their neck? We're not talking about a hard plastic elbow cap.
I wear a maltese combo, which is a layer of gelatin about 1/4 inch thick, encased in neoprene around my neck. It also has a lower bib part that protects the sternum and clavicle area. It's fairly light, very flexible, and not cumbersome. There is a little bit of heat build-up, but nothing a squirt of water wouldn't help. I can't understand why these, or something similar couldn't be made to protect players. Sure, it wouldn't prevent injury, but it could help your odds in an accident (just like a seatbelt in a car). Any thoughts?

Not a bad idea, but I'm not so sure...

Malarchuk speaks about Zednik's injury. Good read.
I had passed this story to a co-worker and fellow hockey fan while at work today after telling her about Zednik's injury. She had looked up the Zednik video after I had told her about it and then, after reading this article, looked up the Malarchuk video. She was definitely more horrified by the Malarchuk incident.
I guess it must've been the nice close-up of Malarchuk's face as he was clutching his neck while blood was constantly squirting out onto the ice.
YouTube has all the angles of it if for those that have not experienced that before. Very graphic, indeed.
