About This Page: This is a discussion on NHL Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Prayers go out for him.
This should convince the league that it's abt time some kind of neck protector becomes mandatory. Very vulnerable spot there and so open to very dangerous injuries. Jugular vein could easily be a killer. Yes, I remember the Marlarchuk injury and these kind stay in your memory for a lifetime.
On a side note, to further illustrate that Hockey players are bad azz's, Zednick skates off the ice after being cut in the neck. But Dwayne Wade needed a wheel chair to get off the court when he dislocated his shoulder. I hate basketball.

Wow. It's really fortunate that he had the presence of mind to skate to the bench as quickly as he could. As someone else noted, it could have been different if he had just dropped and waited for help. Glad to hear he's okay, my prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.
As the anchorwoman on ESPN said, I'm actually surprised that it doesn't happen more often. Very good to hear that Zednick is stable. Being a goalie, I can't even look at the Malarchuck photos anymore. But the reality is there, that can happen to any player at any time.

IIRC, after Malarchuk's throat was cut, two fans in the stands suffered heart attacks from witnessing it... it's pretty horrifying. Of course, Malarchuk lost a *lot* more blood and was a bit more serious - it's really amazing that he lived.

The skate went through his carotid artery. The guy's lucky he didn't suffer any cerebral ischemia with the blood loss plus loss of a huge chunk of the blood going to his brain.
This, medically, was the same as Malarchuk's injury.
