Guess what, something improbable happened for the fourth time in ice hockey history... The team of Trencin, after trailing 0-3 in their playoff quarterfinal series, managed to turn things around and win the series 4-3. This only happened 3 times before in hockey history: twice in the NHL and once in Switzerland.
The result meant that Ziggy Palffy's team Skalica can now avoid last season's champions, and this year's regular season winner, Lubo Visnovsky's former team, Slovan Bratislava.
Instead, Skalica takes on Kosice (2nd in the regular season), the top Eastern Slovak team, where Ladislav Nagy and Vladimir Dravecky are from...
Here is the update on this semifinal series after 4 games:
- GAME 1: (road) Skalica 1, Kosice 4 (Palffy: 1 Assist; 0)
- GAME 2: (road) Skalica 1, Kosice 3 (Palffy: 1 Assist; -1)
- GAME 3: (home) Skalica 3, Kosice 0 (Palffy: 1 Goal; +2)
- GAME 4: (home) Skalica 4, Kosice 2 (Palffy: 4 Assists; +3)
So, that's
1 goal and
6 assists =
7 points in 4 playoff semifinals games so far. The series is tied 2-2, and Game 5 is played tomorrow on Monday, 9 a.m. LA time. The game is shown live
here or via SopCast.
Here is the video of Ziggy's only playoff semifinals goal so far, and a controversial one at that. In Game 3, Skalica was awarded a controversial penalty shot in the final minute of regular time, when Skalica was already leading 2-0.
If the call was controversial, Ziggy's execution of the penalty shot turned out to be even more controversial... It took a long time for the referees to determine whether Ziggy scored the goal, and finally they said he did. It looks like they and the video referee were mistaken! Anyway, watch for yourself:
