Overall, after the first few months I'd say they do a pretty good job. I think Dave Reid does a really good job albeit alittle stiff with the analysis and insider info. I like how they show the fights as part of the highlights as in some games the fights do play an important part whereas ESPN and other outlets don't or they show the fights but nothing else!
Probably the worst thing is ex Calgary gm Craig Button. You have to watch him as he looks like Cindy Brady that one episode where she just stares into the camera the whole time, he does the same thing!! Half the time he's staring into the wrong camera and you can see his eyes wandering for direction and by the time he turns to the right camera they are on the other camera!! Neil Smith is pretty good and much more comfortable in front of the camera. The rotation of the main studio hosts could be alittle better in my opinion. I'm not saying you have to have Don Cherry doing it but the show could use a personality influx and it seems like they are trying out differant people. Chris Therrien was on for a few nights last week but he looked like he had to make a bowel movement the whole time. I know they can't get Kelly Hrudey but someone of that nature I think would help the show a bit to inject some life/humor into an otherwise very informative wrap up show. Maybe they could bring in a Phil Esposito type as he was great on the Ranger games although I'm not sure what he's up to these days?
I have loved having the NHL Network. Their "Top 10" shows are enjoyable, and the "Vintage Games" are always fun to watch, especially when it was Kings vs Toronto and Kings vs Canadians 1993. I don't watch much other than those two things, some live games that are on it, and NHL on the fly.
It's ok. I'm getting into NHL on the Fly a bit more. I did away w/Center Ice this year for various reasons. NHLotFly is great to skip around the league for attention deficit disorder simpletons like myself. I'd be surfing around CI anyway to see what was going on in tighter games.
I enjoy the older playoff recaps they do. There was some real nastiness a few years back that is not in the league IMO these days. Big hits are still here, but the nastiness factor's missing I think.
As for Craig "Cerano" Button, I can't take my eyes off this guys schnazeola
Phil Esposito has an XM show, I think it's still on the air. He would be a great addition to On the Fly.
Ugh... I'm not sure I'd agree with you there. He's been painful to listen to more times than not on XM and usually doesn't have much of value to contribute to the conversation du jour.
I love the NHL Network...the only thing I hate is the constant pimping of
Pittsburgh Penguins DVDs. Is that the only team that makes DVDs? Once and awhile you'll see the New York Rangers DVD but it gets ridiculous. How about the LA Kings Stanley Cup Championship DVD from the year 2015, where's that at?
My TV is almost always on NHL Network it seems. I'm glad to see that they just don't say it's hockey 24/7 but that they also mean it. There's no infomercials at 4 AM, there's hockey. Man I love that.
i the nhl network also. best thing was watching the wjcs. also love the vintage games and series. i can deal with the repetitive commercials since they're all hockey commercials (i think i saw an "as seen on tv" commercial once, but that's it). i end up fast forwarding it most of the time anyway. i usually only watch kings, habs and rags hockey so i LOVE nhl on the fly for highlights of the games i miss.
I too love the NHL Network. I'm still a little pissed that Dish only carries it in HD, which means that it is only on my main tv. Actually, that probably is a good thing as I would never watch the news, surf the internet or watch any other shows. My main tv is pretty much always tuned to Center Ice or the NHL Network.
Looks like they've brought in ex tough guy Alan May who was in the Kings system years ago for color analysis which is pretty cool. He's a little stiff but I wouldn't mind seeing what he can do as not many tough guys get commentary jobs these days!!
